¿Quién eres realmente? 👤✨ Perfect Blue nos enseñó los peligros de la fama mucho antes de las redes sociales. Mima Kirigoe pasó de Idol a una pesadilla que no termina. ¿Realidad o alucinación? 🍒💊 #anime #perfectblue #parati #movie

Satoshi Kon‘s (1997) psychological thriller follows Mima Kirigoe; a former pop idol stepping into the world of acting, only to find the line between performance and the tangible world dissolving. The film is renowned for its seamless blurring of reality and illusion; Kon’s precise editing, mirrored imagery, and narrative disorientation pull the viewer into Mima’s psyche, where memory, performance, and truth become indistinguishable. Each transition feels deliberate, yet destabilizing; reflecting the quiet erosion of control. Its tension is not built on spectacle, but on intrusion: the pressure to be seen, to be perfect. What surrounds Mima becomes a maze of coincidence and control; where every moment feels orchestrated, yet nothing can be proven. Masahiro Ikumi’s sound design and the film’s minimal score amplify its unease, allowing silence and repetition to speak louder than words; creating an atmosphere that lingers long after each scene fades. Perfect Blue unfolds as a meditation on media and illusion; where fiction and reality coexist without boundary, each reinforcing the other. A haunting vision of storytelling that refuses to stay contained. A defining psychological anime: intimate, unsettling, and eerily timeless. Perfect Blue (1998) anime soundtrack 💃🏻 high-quality Japan import vinyl w/ obi! now available ⇢at the lab

Millennium Actress (2001) Directed by: Satoshi Kon Studio: Madhouse The anime is loosely based on the lives of actresses Setsuko Hara and Hideko Takamine and it tells the story of two documentary filmmakers investigating the life of a retired acting legend. Filmmaker Genya Tachibana begins work on a documentary about famed Japanese actress Chiyoko Fujiwara. Now well into old age, Chiyoko has become reclusive and shy about any publicity, but she eventually warms up to Tachibana and starts to relate her life story. Kon's previous project, Perfect Blue was about the dark side of the Cinema Industry & Psychological problems an Actress has to go through for survival. But, this movie is very different from Perfect Blue, showing us emotion of love and the pursuit of a long-lost passion. The most important message I understood from this movie is how art reflects personal experience and how personal life is structured by the narratives we create for ourselves. I'll do a separate post on that. Anyways, this movie is very close to me as Chiyoko's story is very similar to my Grandmother, not by professions, but by memories. Being a 75 y/o lady, she also recalls a lot of her memories whenever her favorite songs, movies appear on the screen of her tv. She loves to talk about her childhood, she talks about her college days, her early days of marriage. And being her only Grandson, I was the only one who listened to all of her fragments of memories since my childhood. Thus I could connect to the memories which were being structured one by one in this movie, pretty well.

This recording session for "Ai no Tenshi" (Angel of Love) from the 1997 film Perfect Blue is a rare piece of anime history with several fascinating details - The three women in the image are the original performers for the fictional idol group CHAM!. From left to right, they are MISA (voice of Rei), Emiko Furukawa (voice of Yukiko), and Mie Shimizu (voice of Mima) In the film, the choreography and singing for CHAM! were intentionally designed not to be perfectly in unison. Director Satoshi Kon wanted to maintain a sense of realism, reflecting the sometimes unpolished nature of real-life underground idol groups. This rare clip is sourced from a rare promotional CD-ROM released alongside the movie in the late 90s. It is one of the few pieces of behind-the-scenes footage that shows the original cast recording their lines and music together in the studio. Fun fact: Perfect Blue and its music had a profound impact on Western filmmakers. Director Darren Aronofsky famously used scenes from this movie as direct inspiration for his films Requiem for a Dream (2000) and Black Swan (2010). #perfectblue #blackswan #requiem
