A year ago Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry all joined Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy’s R.E.M. covers show at 40 Watt Club in the band’s Athens, GA hometown. They didn’t all perform then, but it was their first time onstage together in 17 years. A few months later they staged a proper reunion at their Songwriters Hall Of Fame induction, performing “Losing My Religion.” Now this is sort of becoming a regular thing. R.E.M. playing “Radio Free Europe” Live on the 10th of June, 1983 on the David Letterman Show ⁣ ⁣⁣ One of the greatest singles to have come out of the College Rock movement of the early 80’s was R.E.M.’s “Radio Free Europe”. This song was written about the “Radio Free Europe” radio network that was run by the United States government, which broadcasts to Europe and the Middle East. While the mission of the broadcast is to promote democracy and freedom, R.E.M. makes it a point that this could easily cross the line into propaganda.⁣ From a musical standpoint, the song since gone on to pioneer the emerging “Alternative Rock” movement that was appearing at that time and each band member’s musical contributions are unbelievable. For example, both Peter Buck and Mike Mills’s contribution involve a spectacular marriage of punk rock and new wave musical elements that helped create an archetypal ‘Alternative Rock’ masterpiece. ⁣ ⁣ However, what’s amazing about all of this is that all these musical developments occur over a consistent four-to-the-floor drum beat that’s performed by drummer Bill Berry. ⁣⁣Musically, the song features drummer Bill Berry starting the song with a four-to-the-floor beat, and then the rest of the band enters. Berry plays a steady backbeat throughout the song. During the verses, Mills plays a fast eighth note bassline pulse, characteristic of punk rock and new wave. Guitarist Peter Buck plays the palm-muted lower strings of his guitar, marking the end of a four-bar repetition with an upstroke strummed chord. During the prechorus refrain, Buck switches to playing arpeggios, ending each four bar phrase with a full chord downstroke. Mills accompanies this section by performing independent melody lines with syncopated rhythms. Mills’ last note of the refrain is doubled by a piano.
