You've been working hard, but your flexibility progress has petered out. I've been there.          Here's 4 reasons why              1. No Objective Data    Flexibility programming has to be progressive. However this isn't only limited to sets, reps, and weight. Range of motion is the greatest measure of intensity for flexibility training and it is very important to track this over time. Take pictures, use targets, and measure your range so you know how far to push each session. Range increase isn't always linear but over time you will see an upward trend if tracked accordingly.              2. Stretching too frequently    This will differ depending on a person's current level, but recovery is key to flexibility adaptation. Most people think they need to stretch hard everyday or multiple times a day, but that can just create interference. You won't be able to reach a high enough stimulus to elicit adaptation or you will under recover. Dedicate one or two sessions a week per position you want to improve. Hammer it hard with intensity then recover. Use your current ranges frequently, but when it comes to building new range, less is more!              3. Constantly Swapping Drills    You've heard this before. Proper training isn't fancy. Same with flexibility. Find the best bang for you buck drills that work for you and milk them for as long as possible until there are no more gains to be made. I like to vary thing's slightly in some accessory/ warm up drills to keep it engaging, but the main drills will stay the same for months and even years with small tweaks in loading parameters.                     4. Use Multiple Sets    When it comes to building time under tension at end range, id prefer to break this up in to multiple sets compared to one long stretch. There's a facilitation that happens set to set where you unlock more range and comfort within a position similar to warming up for a max effort compound lift. Khetag Khugaev Weightlifting is hard… That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think of this guy. Sure, he progressed extremely fast, but he petered out before we really got to see the best from him. Whether it was Russia’s ban, a particular mental issue, being burnt out, or a combination of the three, weightlifting’s psychological stress seemed to hit Khugaev harder than anyone else. I’ve also done some digging on what qualifies as a “youth record”. Just like “juniors”, the term “youth” applies through the calendar year someone turns 17. It’s NOT before you turn 18. So while 399 is not the heaviest youth total of all time, it’s the second heaviest total by someone under 18. #1 goes to Kołecki, who famously totaled 405 to best Kakhi in 1999.
