How can India build the state capacity required to deliver equitable healthcare? Dr. Srinath addresses this question with clarity and nuance. He underscores that while the state must remain the guarantor of healthcare systems, it cannot—and should not—be the sole actor responsible for delivering them. The private sector plays a crucial role, bringing with it rapid turnaround times, advanced technologies, and strong capabilities in research and development. These strengths are vital for improving the quality and reach of healthcare services. But the ecosystem does not end there. Citizens’ organisations, particularly nonprofits, provide an indispensable last-mile connection to public health systems. Deeply embedded within communities, they possess a nuanced understanding of local health challenges as well as the social attitudes and beliefs that shape behaviour. These organisations can strengthen the capacity of frontline workers, conduct health camps and awareness drives, support healthcare professionals in designing effective interventions, and reconnect communities with formal health systems through informed, context-specific recommendations. India’s healthcare system is often debated — but what do the numbers actually say? As per Government of India data, India’s overall doctor–population ratio stands at approximately 1:811, which is better than the WHO’s recommended norm of 1:1000. But when we look at state-wise data, the picture becomes even more interesting. 🏆 Top 5 States with Best Doctor–Patient Ratio (People per doctor — lower is better) 1. Goa – ~353 people per doctor 2. Karnataka – ~457 people per doctor 3. Andhra Pradesh – ~488 people per doctor 4. Tamil Nadu – ~495 people per doctor 5. Kerala – ~509 people per doctor What stands out? 👉 4 out of the top 5 states are from South India. This raises a bigger question: Why do South Indian states consistently rank higher in: • Public healthcare systems • Literacy rates • Human Development Index • Social development indicators • Public health infrastructure Is it better governance? Healthcare should never depend on geography 🏥✨ On 16th September, the MTD team visited the Sonawale Primary Health Centre to assess its infrastructure and service capacity, in close coordination with the Medical Officer and PHC staff. What we saw was dedication beyond limits 💙 👩‍⚕️ 12 healthcare staff members 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Serving a population of 25,523 🩺 50–70 patients treated every single day 🚑 Managing OPD, maternal care, immunisations & emergency cases. Sonawale PHC is the only healthcare facility for multiple surrounding villages — making it a lifeline for the entire community 🌍 Through Project Sanjeevan and the immense support of PPFAS Mutual Funds, we stepped in to strengthen this critical centre 💪 Here’s what we did: ✔️ Donated essential medical equipment to enhance patient care ✔️ Upgraded infrastructure to improve efficiency and comfort ✔️ Strengthened service capacity for better routine & emergency response This wasn’t just an upgrade — it was an investment in accessible, dignified, and quality healthcare for thousands who depend on this centre every day 🤝 Because when we strengthen primary healthcare, we strengthen entire communities 🌱 Project Sanjeevani is our commitment to building resilient rural healthcare systems — ensuring no village is left behind. #ProjectSanjeevani #RuralHealthcare #HealthcareAccess #CommunityImpact #MakingTheDifference #MTD
