Parents often ask if they have a picky eater or if their child is just being stubborn. I’m not sure if I’ve ever met a picky eater who is NOT stubborn. Picky eaters, especially extreme picky eaters, have a lot going on on the inside and they are very committed to protecting themselves! If you’ve got a picky eater and it’s causing a lot of stress, our free picky eater guide is a great place to start (link in bio). #kidseatincolor #pickyeater #fussyeaters #parentsupport

NOVELTY FTW! 👊 If you’re dealing with picky eating, give them a spatula, kid tongs, a tiny spoon, a popsicle stick...anything that’s a little unique and not their typical utensil. Kids love to master new skills and are drawn to novelty. You might be surprised by how they eat - no pressure or bribery required. Do we still want them to eat with “regular” utensils? Yup. But sometimes adding novelty here and there can make the entire process more successful. Plus, when we do something a little silly at dinner, it can help us feel less stressed and more playful, and kids pick up on that. They feel about eating how we feel about feeding them - so a positive, playful environment helps all of us. Our Toddler/Kid Course has over 100 easy novelty ideas that can help make mealtime a lot less stressful, whether you have a picky eater or you’re aiming to prevent picky eating down the road. Picky eating can feel like you’re negotiating with a tiny but stubborn diplomat. “You’re so picky!” “Just one bite!” “Eat your broccoli, it’s good for you!”   Here’s the thing-how we talk about food matters as much as what’s on the plate. Words can either make kids curious… or shut them down. And while I don’t usually love the term “picky” (because it can stick as a label), I’m using it here since it’s what most parents search for when they’re looking for help. What I really want you to think about is that your child is still learning about certain foods-because that’s what’s actually happening.   Instead of labeling them “picky,” try: “Looks like you’re still learning about that one.” It normalizes the process and keeps the door open.   Instead of lecturing about nutrition, let them see you enjoying the food. Kids watch more than they listen-if you’re happily munching green beans, they’re more likely to wonder what they’re missing.   Give them a “No Thank You” bowl. It’s a safe spot for food they’re not ready for yet. It keeps mealtimes calm and still counts as exposure-because touching and smelling the food is progress.   Always pair something new with a safe food they already like. It anchors the meal and gives them confidence to explore without feeling cornered.   And if you really want to spark curiosity? Keep it playful. A carrot can be a “sword.” Broccoli can be “dino trees.” Play breaks down resistance way faster than pressure ever will.   Progress with picky eating isn’t just the bite-it’s all the little steps along the way. THE NON NEGOTIABLE FIVE ⬇️ 5 things I did to help aid in my picky eater trying a new food weekly! 1. THE PRO 👊 You can’t force appetite. Period. Kids (and especially teens) are wired to push back when they feel controlled — and meals are no exception. Skipping a meal isn’t the end of the world. It’s often the beginning of autonomy. And for picky eaters? Autonomy is the gateway to trying new food. 2. THE TRUTH BOMB 💣 Forcing bites, bribing with dessert, hovering at the table — none of it builds trust with food. You’re teaching them to perform instead of listen to their hunger. If they say no? Respect the no. That’s how they learn to say yes without pressure later. 3. THE SHIFT 🧩 Start seeing the skipped meal as data, not defiance. Did they eat a bigger snack? Are they tired? Stressed? Maybe they’re just not hungry. When you stop turning meals into battles, they stop feeling like punishment. 4. THE LONG GAME 🎯 Respect builds trust. Trust leads to curiosity. Curiosity leads to them picking up a new food without you saying a word. That’s how picky eaters change — when they decide to try. Not when you convince them. Not when you control them. When you chill out and give them room. 5. THE POWER MOVE 🔋 Back off strategically — not passively. This isn’t about giving up, it’s about showing up differently. You still plate the meal. You still offer variety. You still model eating. But you ditch the guilt trips, the “just try one bite,” the constant commentary. That shift? It shocks picky eaters into curiosity because it’s the opposite of what they expect. Predictable pressure keeps them stuck. Calm consistency sets them free. Picky eating strategies: part 2! My son is 16 months and he is a picky eater (despite my efforts). But the good news is, I’m not stressed because I know it’s normal and I know how to respond! Toddlers go through so many changes, it’s inevitable that they will have ups and downs with eating as well. When we pressure or coerce toddlers to eat, it can end up backfiring and lead to more mealtime battles down the road. This approach is built on the foundation of trust at the table. He feels safe to explore the foods and I’m putting in the work to model and give him my attention during the meal. You can do this too! Follow along for more tips ❤️ Hi! I’m Marissa. Are you making these mistakes during mealtime with a picky eater? 💬 Comment if these are strategies that you would try with your picky eater! ✔️ giving them choices ✔️ follow the 80/20 rule for new foods ✔️ eat with them! ✔️ talk about the foods! ✔️ encourage interacting with the food ✔️ make it FUN! Remember, feeding therapy should be FUN! We want to encourage positive relationships with food and one way to do that is by reducing the pressure to eat everything and allow them to explore the foods at a pace that feels safe and comfortable to them. If that means we’re crunching our carrot sticks and painting with dip then that’s what we’re going to do! 💾 Save this post to come back to later for more feeding therapy strategies to help your picky eater at home! #slp #speechtherapy #feedingtherapy #pedsslp #pickyeaters #pickytoddler #pickyeater #toddlermeals #pickyeatertips #mealtimestrategies #toddlernutrition

You don’t have to force kids to try new foods to help them expand their palate. In fact, pushing (even with a “just one bite!” rule) can backfire and make picky eating worse. One strategy that feels a lot better for everyone? Optional taste tests 🙌🏼 Instead of putting a new or disliked food on their plate (and triggering those “nope!” instincts), invite them to take a tiny taste if they want to. No pressure. No strings attached. Full permission to say no. Maybe it’s a family activity where you all try it - and if they don’t want to try it, let them feed it to you! I like using tiny tasting spoons to create some novelty. This is different from a “two-bite rule” or “try it rule.” It’s about inviting curiosity, not requiring it. And that small difference makes a huge impact. Taste tests help: ⭐️ Build confidence ⭐️ Support autonomy ⭐️ Keep mealtimes positive If they decline? No big deal! You can: ⭐️ Ask them to feed it to you ⭐️ Model trying it yourself (and talking about it casually) ⭐️ Simply move on and offer again another time Every exposure counts - even if they don’t taste it today.
