My 5 NON-NEGOTIABLES for Picky Eaters (if you actually want to see progress!) …Don’t skip #5 — it’s the one most parents miss! Let’s make one thing clear: picky eating isn’t just a “phase” for every child. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like nothing is working — these 5 things are the foundation I teach every family I work with. Here’s what I never skip: 1️⃣ Sit-down meals & snacks Grazing makes picky eating worse. Structure helps kids come to meals more ready to eat and try! 2️⃣ A safe food ALWAYS on the plate When kids see something familiar, they feel calm enough to explore. No pressure = more progress. 3️⃣ Daily exposure to variety Even if they don’t eat it. Seeing, smelling, and touching foods builds trust and tolerance. 4️⃣ Modeling YOU are your child’s best example. Eat the foods you want them to eat. Let them watch and learn! 5️⃣ Regulate before you feed If your child is dysregulated, they’re not going to eat. Help them feel calm and connected before meals (this is a game changer!). 🤍🤍For more, comment PICKY for a copy of my free picky eating guide!!🤍🤍 ✨LIKE SAVE FOLLOW✨ @falcks_feeding @falcks_feeding @falcks_feeding Save & share this if you’re in the thick of picky eating — it does get better when you have the right tools! #pickyeatingtips #feedingtherapist #pediatricfeeding #feedingtherapy #toddlermeals #pickyeaterhelp #sensorykids #momlife #mealtimestruggles

Picky eating can feel like you’re negotiating with a tiny but stubborn diplomat. “You’re so picky!” “Just one bite!” “Eat your broccoli, it’s good for you!” Here’s the thing-how we talk about food matters as much as what’s on the plate. Words can either make kids curious… or shut them down. And while I don’t usually love the term “picky” (because it can stick as a label), I’m using it here since it’s what most parents search for when they’re looking for help. What I really want you to think about is that your child is still learning about certain foods-because that’s what’s actually happening. Instead of labeling them “picky,” try: “Looks like you’re still learning about that one.” It normalizes the process and keeps the door open. Instead of lecturing about nutrition, let them see you enjoying the food. Kids watch more than they listen-if you’re happily munching green beans, they’re more likely to wonder what they’re missing. Give them a “No Thank You” bowl. It’s a safe spot for food they’re not ready for yet. It keeps mealtimes calm and still counts as exposure-because touching and smelling the food is progress. Always pair something new with a safe food they already like. It anchors the meal and gives them confidence to explore without feeling cornered. And if you really want to spark curiosity? Keep it playful. A carrot can be a “sword.” Broccoli can be “dino trees.” Play breaks down resistance way faster than pressure ever will. Progress with picky eating isn’t just the bite-it’s all the little steps along the way. Want my full 7 pediatrician-backed tips to help your picky eater try new foods (no bribes needed)? THE NON NEGOTIABLE FIVE ⬇️ 5 things I did to help aid in my picky eater trying a new food weekly! 1. THE PRO 👊 You can’t force appetite. Period. Kids (and especially teens) are wired to push back when they feel controlled — and meals are no exception. Skipping a meal isn’t the end of the world. It’s often the beginning of autonomy. And for picky eaters? Autonomy is the gateway to trying new food. 2. THE TRUTH BOMB 💣 Forcing bites, bribing with dessert, hovering at the table — none of it builds trust with food. You’re teaching them to perform instead of listen to their hunger. If they say no? Respect the no. That’s how they learn to say yes without pressure later. 3. THE SHIFT 🧩 Start seeing the skipped meal as data, not defiance. Did they eat a bigger snack? Are they tired? Stressed? Maybe they’re just not hungry. When you stop turning meals into battles, they stop feeling like punishment. 4. THE LONG GAME 🎯 Respect builds trust. Trust leads to curiosity. Curiosity leads to them picking up a new food without you saying a word. That’s how picky eaters change — when they decide to try. Not when you convince them. Not when you control them. When you chill out and give them room. 5. THE POWER MOVE 🔋 Back off strategically — not passively. This isn’t about giving up, it’s about showing up differently. You still plate the meal. You still offer variety. You still model eating. But you ditch the guilt trips, the “just try one bite,” the constant commentary. That shift? It shocks picky eaters into curiosity because it’s the opposite of what they expect. Predictable pressure keeps them stuck. Calm consistency sets them free. The opinions about picky eating are louder than necessary. Some kids grow out of it. Some need more time. Some just need less pressure. I have one child who will eat $60 worth of sashimi in one sitting, ask what the catch of the day is, and absolutely request a bite of everyone’s plate when we go out. And I have other children where fries, pizza, or chicken nuggets are a necessary backup plan when we eat out. Don’t get me wrong—they eat a ton of fruits and vegetables, and I’m grateful for that. But eating out is still extra challenging. If this is you, you’re not alone. You have permission to let curiosity bloom on its own timeline. Kids are people first. Eaters second. Were you a picky eater as a child? Share if you relate to this ✨

We have been in the Duke CHOMP study for AFRID for about 3 months now! Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, more commonly known as ARFID, is a condition characterised by the person avoiding certain foods or types of food, having restricted intake in terms of overall amount eaten, or both. For Keegan he is sensitive to the taste, texture, smell, and appearance of certain types of food. he only likes to eat foods at a certain temperature, certain styles, and in certain ways. Many time this can lead to sensory-based avoidance or restriction of intake. Keegan has done so well with the therapies! He loves working with the team, making videos and filling out the surveys! We have learned to make anything around feeding more positive! Adding over 20 new foods has been such a blessing and I am so thankful for the Duke team!! #autismspectrumdisorder #autism #microbiome #ourautismjourney #autismdiet #autismparents #pickyeaterproblems #leakyguthealing #autismparent #nutritionforautism #autismmom #thepickyeater #functionalnutrition #leakygutsyndrome #leakygut #functionalmedicine #autismnutrition #arfid #sensorykid #autismnutritionist #autismsupport #pickyeater

I hope this helps the parents who are feeling helpless watching their child struggle with food❤️

A common mistake that can make a picky eater eat less is giving them too big of a portion of something that they don’t love or haven’t eaten before. Instead, offer a teeny tiny tasting portion… if they’ll allow it on their plate! If they won’t — that’s okay. We all start somewhere! In next week’s free picky eating workshop I’ll explain what to do when they won’t even try something new, or won’t even get NEAR something new.
