During a PIP assessment, one question often decides whether you score points or lose them. It sounds harmless, but it’s designed to test how consistent your answers are with the law’s definition of “reliably.” . That question is: “Can you do it?” . Here’s why it’s a trap and how to answer it correctly: 1. The law doesn’t ask if you can do it once. It asks whether you can do it safely, repeatedly, to an acceptable standard, and within a reasonable time. That is Regulation 4(2A) of the PIP Regulations 2013. . 2. “Can you do it?” needs context. If you say “yes,” they assume you can always do it, without help, pain, or fatigue. Instead say: “I can do it, but only with help, and it causes pain, confusion, or exhaustion.” That gives a legally accurate picture. . 3. Explain what happens when you try. Example: “I can cook a meal, but it takes over an hour, I forget steps, and I have to stop several times to rest.” You’re not saying you can’t — you’re saying you can’t do it reliably. . 4. Watch for follow-up questions. They might ask about hobbies or work to test if your answers are consistent. Always bring your answer back to reliability: “Yes, but I can only manage that task occasionally and need support after.” . 5. Keep answers short and factual. The assessor is noting how you describe your limits, not how polite or detailed you sound. Be clear, calm, and consistent. .
