Mosh pits are a sacred space. I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that amongst the abject chaos, there’s a set of rules. The most sacrosanct of all is that “If someone falls, you stop and pick them up”, if there’s a more fitting analogy for how humanity can thrive I’m yet to find it. I can fully understand why some people would look at a mosh pit and think it’s violent and aggressive. But it’s more than a mass musical brawl, it’s a cathartic, collective release of tension that means people don’t bubble over with difficult and problematic emotions in every day life. You get it all out in the circle. This year I had the great pleasure of introducing my eldest son to the beautiful anarchy, it was a moment delivered with intent and a right of passage that I made him aware was welcoming him to adulthood. I’d been reading about how we no longer have rituals that welcome young boys into adulthood and as a result have a lot of young men wandering through their twenties with essentially a childlike attitude. It hit me HARD and helped me understand a lot about mistakes I made from just wandering through an entire decade (and a bit) with a reckless, self absorbed attitude, I didn’t want the same fate for my son. So I devised this experience as a ritual. A dangerous, exciting, thrilling, terrifying, unpredictable and exhilarating hour that would make him aware of how dangerous, exciting, thrilling, terrifying, unpredictable and exhilarating life can be. He handled himself like a festival veteran, I think he’ll do just fine. I love you Oscar.
