MORE INFO HERE The place command is truly one of the most useful things you can teach your dog. It’s a great way to teach your dog calmness, or an “off switch”. It’s also a great way to ask your pup to do something healthy when they may otherwise be picking up bad habits (ex. rushing people at the front door, begging at the dinner table, counter surfing while you cook, barking out the window, etc.). If your dog only relaxes when they want to, and not when you need them to, show them how to do so when you ask! This is a process, as the video shows, & will not happen overnight. Try implementing place time into your daily routine immediately following exercise. After a long walk or fetch, follow it up by heading inside & spending time teaching place. Work up the duration they stay on place each time you practice! Reward & release for calmness. As they learn what place is, you’ll notice they relax faster and faster. Place is also a great way to mentally stimulate your pup / give them a job to do, as they are using brain power to keep themselves on the bed the entire time (different from kennel time)! If you follow up a long walk with ~30 mins on place, you’ll begin to notice that your dog is WAY more tired than if you only walked them. “PLACE” - Part 2!! The place command is useful for SO many different things. That’s why we TRAIN to PREPARE for the real life instances!!! Here are 4 ways to proof your dog’s place-stay!! 1. Vacuum!! A lot of dogs I work with either want to chase the vacuum, or are terrified of the vacuum. Either way, incorporating the place command while you vacuum is an incredible way to resolve both of these issues. 2. Open the door, knock on the door, go out of sight! This one will most likely be SUPER tough for your dog at first, so be patient!!! 3. Cook/clean!!! Often times we get frustrated with our dogs for being right up under our feet while we’re in the kitchen. So why not solve that problem with place? 4. Relax/hang out on the couch/watch TV! Sure, there’s always time for cuddle time, but why not throw some “brain work” in for your dog? The place command is mentally exhausting for your dog - so use it!!! This is Bagheera, a three-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, working with Koru K9 trainer Jordan, who is introducing the prong collar during place command training using a method called NePoPo. What is NePoPo? It stands for negative, positive, positive. How does it work? It begins with “negative” pressure—or negative reinforcement, one of the four quadrants of dog training. Negative reinforcement is like an alarm clock: it’s a means to an end. Once you give into the pressure the sound causes you, the pressure goes away. In this video, Jordan taps on the prong collar to apply a low-level stimulation (like an alarm clock) on the prong collar until Bagheera completes the command. Then they move onto the first positive: the release of pressure, which just means stopping prong collar taps to stop the pressure. Lastly, comes the second positive: the reward. Jordan taps Bagheera’s prong collar towards the place cot and once all four of Bagheera’s feet reach the cot, she’s released and rewarded off the cot. These steps are repeated until Bagheera walks on her place cot without any resistance, or she offers the behavior. This is early on in Bagheera’s training so, all things considered, she does an awesome job!
