This video is a simplified time-lapse of the process that I utilize for paper casting. It was created during my residency at @calgaryalliedartsfoundation in @cspacekingedward through November 2020 -January 2021. The pulp that I’m making comes from recycled cardboard boxes (that’s why it looks brown). The first step to obtain the pulp is cutting the boxes into small pieces and soaking them for several hours. After that I proceed to blend the carton, in a ratio of 2 parts water to 1 part carton. After that, it is time to start casting some sculptures! In the video you can see I’m putting some of the pulp into one of my plaster molds, and with a sponge I take out the excess water. These are the plaster moulds I made to shape the slip casting pieces. If you’re not familiar with slip casting, just think of a chocolate bunny—yes, really! 🐰🍫 You pour liquid porcelain (aka slip) into a mould, let it form a shell, then pour out the excess. After firing, it transforms into something delicate yet strong. Kind of like magic, but with a lot more patience and kiln time! ✨ In the first frame, you’ll see the plaster moulds I made to shape these pieces. The second frame shows the freshly cast pieces—still unglazed and waiting for their transformation. And finally, in the last frame, you can see the finished pieces, all shiny and ready to go!
