How Minds Change 🧠📈 This is how you actually change minds politically, and it’s backed by science. Most people think facts change minds. They don’t. Decades of psychology shows tha facts alone almost never works in politics. Researchers call this the Elaboration Likelihood Model. It shows we think in two modes: logical mode… and emotional mode. Online and in politics, almost everyone is in emotional mode. This along with other key insights comes from this book: HOW TO CHANGE MINDS. Even during World War Two, studies found that people could learn the facts — and still keep the same opinions. Information went in. But beliefs stayed the same. It’s a common misconception that politics is just about ideas. But It’s really about identity. When beliefs feel personal, the brain goes into defense mode. It stops listening. So what actually works? First: build trust before you argue. Second: show you understand the other side. Third: then make your case. Studies show people are more persuaded by someone they feel respects them. Just think, who are people you listen to? People you trust. And when do you feel open to listening? Once you’ve felt heard and understood. It so simple, cliche even but it works. And this is exactly why social media is hurting us. Polarization is not a new phenomenon, but the way it’s playing out is because social media allows for far too much of the wrong type of discussion. Inhuman, disconnected, and fueled by the desire to go viral. If we want less division, we don’t need louder arguments. We need better ones. — #politics #psychology #polarization

Three Polarizing Sheets: a simple demonstration that shows quantum mechanical behavior with light polarization. Two linear polarizing sheets oriented at 90 degrees blocks all light- if a third sheet is placed between, oriented at 45 degrees, an eighth of the original light then gets through!
