We rode Huck in a few different places before his trip to Nevada. We went to arenas and ponied him (much like this) through thicker brush so he'd get used to trees hitting his saddle and paniers. He was prepared and ready for this trip. Carston planned to ride Huck right after he took this video because he was doing so well. I still remember getting the call and hearing Carstons agony-filled voice say, "Hucks gone." My stomach dropped. They were shed hunting (looking for the antlers that deer drop every year). And they found a huge one. As Carston was tying it to Hucks saddle, he was perfectly calm. His ears, his eyes, even his stance was comfortable. Carston wiggled the antlers to make sure they were secure and Huck was gone. Carston ran over to Cheeka and his friend hopped off. But the nerves of everyone around made her nervous and she was difficult to get on. By that time, Huck was nowhere to be seen. We later learned he ran back the way they came passed the trailer and got caught in a patch of trees where all the gear was ripped off him. Only the halter remained with him. They spotted him once but he was so nervous that every time they got near him he'd run away further, barely considering coming closer before taking off. Carston came home that night after hours of searching resulted in nothing. Too devastated to continue his trip. He'd felt like he should just carry the antlers back to the trailer, but brushed it off and continued putting them on a currently very calm Huck. He beat himself up for ignoring the prompting for months. If you take anything away from this, remember that not every prompting is earth shaking or obvious. Not every whisper of the Spirit is so clearly from the Spirit. Most of the time, promptings seem like thoughts. An idea redirecting our path from where we're currently trying to head. And it's too easy to shake off. Especially when we're already so set in our path. Not every missed prompting will result in something so drastic. We may not ever even know what would have happened. There’s a lot to say about this ride. 😂 It was Trisha’s first ride out since August and while it wasn’t great, it also wasn’t terrible. I rode Ronnie and ponied Trisha for the first half and then I swapped to riding Trisha and she told me I had two options: 1) I could pony Ronnie off of her or 2) I could live to see another day. I chose to live. So Ronnie was left to his own devices for the second half of the ride, which came with its own challenges. He was great! But the first handful of times he came running up behind us were disastrous - which was good for Trisha and after a while she didn’t bat an eye at his antics.

Baloo's first time ever over a "proper" jump and he did it like a pro 💪🏼 It is so cool how he gets so much confidence from Coogs. "Oh this is what we do? Okay!" Baloo used to be terrified of water. Ponied him into a dam from Coogs = no problems with water now! Scared to go over poles? Ponied him over some small jumps with Coogs - doesn't bat an eye. Scared of cars and bicycles? Ponied him with Coogs who doesnt care for vehicles = traffic is a breeze now. Coogs is kinda like his big brother when it comes to scary things. As long as Coogs is cool with it, Baloo will realise it is okay too. It is actually so special to let him build his confidence in such a natural way ❤️

When I’m short on time, this is usually how I work both horses 😂. It’s fun for Tucker because he gets to be a cutting horse, and it’s fun for Ruach who always enjoys a good play and chase. The two of them also ponied so much together when we were traveling, that they can actually do it at liberty, with Ruach staying beside us and taking cues. It’s fun, and it makes for something different!

Your young horse can benefit massively just by being ponied ⚡️! Learning how to cross creeks, pick through different terrain, interact with other horses on the trail, ect. In my opinion, a youngin’ following a seasoned/broke horse is bound to see them as a GOOD EXAMPLE💡… If they see the horse in front of them doing it, then “how hard can it be?” 🙌🏼

We explored a petrified Sequoia forest but the trail got a little rougher than anticipated.
