In printmaking, every plate has its own personality, its own little rules. Side note: The way I print my TetraPaks probably falls under collagraph, in terms of a printmaking technique. If I were just scratching lines and not printing any textures, that would be drypoint; but since I’m building and printing from the surface itself, it leans more towards collagraph territory. A brilliant example of reduction printing from @ajmasthay, created for @goosetheband at the CMAC Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY. Each colour is carved by hand from a single sheet of linoleum and printed in sequence. As the design builds, the block is gradually destroyed — a process often called “suicide printing.” The result is a finite edition that can never be reprinted, which is why collectors value these works so highly. 🎉kitchen lithography in 5 easy steps- Day 32 of #the100dayschallenge - Printmaking Fun🎉 As many people have asked about the process of Kitchen lithography. I thought I would make a little video from the beginning to the end in a few steps. Steps: Step 1: Prepare your plate by wrapping a sheet of foil around a card. Step 2: Draw with a crayon. Step 3: Process the plate with cola. Step 4: Ink up. Step 5: Print with a spoon. Materials: 1. Kitchen foil (aluminium foil) 2. Cola – for processing the plate (any brand and make is fine) 3. Lithography pencil (or any oil-based drawing material. ie, crayons)⁠ 4. Water – for washing the plate⁠ 5. Oil-based printmaking ink (oil paint also works)⁠ 6. Roller – to apply the ink⁠ 7. Sponge – for cleaning the plate⁠ 8. Spoon – for printing (a real press also works!)⁠ 9. Tape – to tape down the plate 10. Kitchen towel⁠ 11. Vegetable oil – for cleaning up ⁠ 12. 2 x cardboard sheets – one for the foil plate, one for rolling up the ink (you can also use a tray and dinner plates instead, as long as they have a flat surface)⁠ 13. Paper – to print your edition (any paper will do, even photocopy paper)⁠ ✨⁠ I hope you like this tutorial and manage to get all the materials and give it a go. I’m having more fun then I thought I would exploring several approaches to one design in monotype printing. I’ve gotten a new plate and am working hard at getting it broken in (but still keeping it clean!) I made five or six renditions of this illustration~ Curious to see all of my attempts at this one? They are all in my grid for a more leisurely viewing experience. I continue to ponder what inspires me these days, I’m looking forward to some deep dives this winter and spring and excited to share along the way.
