Here’s the basics to finally master manual mode: - Shutter speed controls motion. Fast speed (1/1000) freezes it. Slow speed (1/30) blurs it. Start here when your subject is moving. As a basic rule of thumb, set your shutter speed to 1/focal length. For example if you shoot with a 100mm lens, use 1/100 at least. - Aperture controls depth of field. Wide open (f/1.8) blurs the background. Closed down (f/11) keeps everything sharp. Start here when background matters. - ISO controls light sensitivity. Keep it as low as possible. Higher ISO means more grain. Only raise it when the other two settings have no room left to work with. The order to think in: What should my background look like? → Set aperture What’s my subject doing? → Set shutter speed Is the photo bright enough? → Adjust ISO That’s it. Every photo you take is just those three decisions in that order. Pro tip: raising your aperture can also help with getting sharper photos of fast moving subjects, because the focus doesn’t need to be as precise. The reason auto mode holds you back isn’t that it takes bad photos, it’s that it makes all three decisions for you, so you never build the instinct to make them yourself. Switch to manual this week. POV: You’ve had a fancy camera for years… and you’re still on Auto 👀📸 Let’s fix that. Here’s what those letters on your camera actually mean ⬇️ 🟢 AUTO Your camera decides everything. Great for quick snaps. Not great if you want creative control. 🅿️ P – Program Mode The camera sets shutter & aperture, but you can control ISO, white balance and exposure. Perfect stepping stone out of Auto. ⏱️ S – Shutter Priority YOU choose the shutter speed. Fast (1/1000) freezes kids, dancers, sports. Slower adds motion blur and light. If it moves… this is your mode. 🌙 A – Aperture Priority YOU choose the f-stop. Low number (f/1.8) = blurry background, dreamy portraits. Higher number (f/8+) = more in focus. ISO has a bad reputation. For years I treated it like a last resort. Anything above 800 felt like I had done something wrong. The problem wasn’t ISO. It was my understanding of it. ISO doesn’t create light. It controls how bright your image appears. But simply put, raising your ISO makes your image digitally brighter. The trade-off is more visible noise. There are different ways to manage ISO. I keep mine as low as the scene allows and control exposure first with aperture and shutter speed. If I still need more brightness, I raise ISO. I will even use Auto ISO within the limits I ask the camera to set when I want to focus more on shooting than settings.
