In investment banking, a large part of your reputation is built through email. Senior bankers often form an opinion of you before they ever meet you — simply by how you communicate. A few small habits make a big difference. 1. Be concise. Senior bankers receive hundreds of emails per day. If your message takes more than a few seconds to understand, you’ve already lost their attention. Example: NO GOOD: “Hi, just wanted to follow up on the model and see what you think when you get a chance.” GOOD: “Updated LBO model attached — key change is lower exit multiple (9.0x vs 9.5x). IRR now ~18%.” The point should be visible immediately. ⸻ 2. Anticipate the next question. The best analysts don’t just send information — they answer the follow-up question before it’s asked. Example: NO GOOD: “Attached is the updated comps table.” GOOD: “Updated comps attached. Median EV/EBITDA now 10.4x (vs 9.8x previously) due to Company X earnings revision.” Good emails save senior bankers time. ⸻ 3. Always include the key takeaway. Don’t make people dig through an attachment or model to understand the point. Example: NO GOOD: “Please see the attached analysis.” GOOD: “Based on the analysis, the transaction would generate ~22% IRR assuming a 9x exit multiple.” Your email should answer the question before someone opens the file. ⸻ 4. Don’t leave people waiting — acknowledge quickly. Even if you don’t have the answer yet, confirm you received the request. Example: “Received — will revert shortly.” or “Noted. The money is real. So are the tradeoffs. Here’s what actually gets taken from you in investment banking, from someone who lived it for five years: 1️⃣ Your time. It is not just long hours, it is unpredictable hours. You cannot commit to plans, you cancel constantly, and relationships take damage from that over time. People who are not in finance eventually stop inviting you to things. No 2️⃣ Your health. Sleep is the first thing to go. Then exercise. Then eating well because you are ordering in at 11pm or grabbing whatever is fast. The lifestyle compounds negatively the same way good habits compound positively. 3️⃣ Your 20s. This one is underrated. Banking absorbs the years when most people are figuring out who they are, building friend groups, dating, exploring. Some people make peace with that trade. Others do not realize what they missed until they are out. 4️⃣ Your ability to disconnect. Even on vacation you are checking email. Even on weekends you are on call. Most people do not notice the psychological cost of never being fully off until they leave and feel the relief of actually being unreachable. What you get in return is real. The money, the network, the training. A lot of ex-bankers say they would do the first two years again. Very few say they would do five or more.
