Dyslexia is a learning disability that impacts someone’s ability to learn, read and, interpret words/letters/symbols. Dyslexia itself does NOT impact general intelligence. It’s one of the more commonly understood and diagnosed learning disabilities. Dyslexia can be treated but not cured. People with dyslexia will always struggle with reading in some capacity, but intervention can minimize how significant that struggle is for the individual. 📚👀 . #dyslexia #specialeducation #spedteacher #autism #teacher #learningdisabilities #autismparenting #reading #learning #psychology #tutor #disability

Learning Difficulty (aka Specific Learning Disorder, SLD) and Learning Disability (aka Intellectual Developmental Disorder, IDD) are distinct conditions that differ significantly in their characteristics and impact on individuals. Learning difficulty refers to difficulties in specific academic areas such as reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia), or maths (dyscalculia). Individuals with learning difficulties typically have average or above-average intelligence but struggle with particular academic skills, performing significantly below what is expected for their age. The disorder is identified when academic performance in reading, writing, or maths is substantially below the level expected based on the individual’s age, intelligence, and educational background. It primarily affects academic performance, leading to frustration and lower self-esteem, but it does not impact overall cognitive functioning. In contrast, Learning Disability, also known as intellectual disability, involves significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Individuals with Learning Disability have an IQ significantly below average, typically below 70-75, and face difficulties in adaptive behaviors, which affect their ability to live independently and function socially. Learning Disability is diagnosed based on both intellectual assessment and observation of adaptive functioning, typically evident before the age of 18. The disorder affects all areas of cognitive and adaptive functioning, sometimes requiring extensive and lifelong support in various aspects of life, including education, employment, and daily living skills. #learningdifficulties #learningdisability #intellectualdisability #neurodivergent #mentalhealth #psychiatry #psychiatrist

My inability to comprehend algebra is a poor way to measure my capacity for success in other areas. Despite the learning disabilities, I CAN learn, just not traditional material in a traditional way. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Students are often told they should just “apply themselves.” However, in the case of specific learning disorders, no amount of “application” can change brain structure. 🧠 ⭐️ Accommodations, modifications, and even substitutions will be the key to success with conditions like this. . #autism #autistic #neurodivergent #learningdisabilities #dyslexia #specialeducation #teacher #specialneeds #disability #actuallyautistic #autismawareness #dyscalculia #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #autismacceptance #education

We could not BELIEVE it..... "This little girl with autism started doing primitive reflex integration exercises 3x a week—and the results have been amazing! 🙌" Primitive reflexes are automatic movements we’re born with to help us survive, but when these reflexes don’t integrate properly, they can create challenges like: 🌪️ Sensory overload 🧩 Difficulty with focus and learning 🤹‍♂️ Challenges in motor coordination and emotional regulation By working on specific, targeted exercises, we help the brain "rewire" and release these retained reflexes. Here’s what can happen when reflexes are integrated, which is what happened to her: 💡 Improved focus and attention 🏃‍♂️ Better motor control and body awareness 😊 Reduced emotional outbursts and sensory sensitivities( She stopped aggressively reacting when we would touch her!😍) 🌈 Increased ability to engage and learn. For kids with autism, reflex integration can be life-changing, helping them feel calmer, more connected, and more in control of their world. ❤️ Curious about how this works? Let’s talk or DM for more info! 🔄🧠 #autism #brightminds #brightmindsneurodevelopment #brainhealth #adhd

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a hidden, but common disorder. 1/14 people have DLD…which is huge! Every high school class will have at least one, probably two kids with DLD. Unfortunately, DLD is widely known and I am here to help raise awareness ☺️. #developmentallanguagedisorder #dld #1in14 #earlylanguagedevelopment #speechtherapy #littlelanguagelab #bayareamoms #sanjoseslp #sanjoseparents #sanjosespeechtherapist #sanjoseslp

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮… _ I’m so grateful for all the recent messages of support to my recent ‘return’ post. It was always my intention to someday share my journey of becoming the 1st deafblind Doctor, because I knew (and hoped) it’d someday help others. I just needed to find the right time to share my story where I felt both ready and safe to do so. _ To no surprise, there have been questions - some ignorant but mostly curious, which I welcome. The most standout question so far has been ‘but how much can you hear and see?’ not realising that deafblindness doesn’t always mean completely deaf/blind. _ Like any disability, deafblindness comes on a huge spectrum. I (very poorly) try to compare it to limb difference, where people have varying levels of limb loss impacting mobility in different ways. But these different ‘levels’ don’t make those people any less of an amputee - it’s the same as deafblindness; one may be completely deafblind, whilst another may have only light perception or tunnel vision. It doesn’t make either any ‘less’ deafblind. That just invalidates the experience of that disability overall. _ A lot of our attitudes towards disability are based on engrained stereotypes and pre-set beliefs; ones that are too often outdated and incorrect. That’s why I am creating videos to debunk the myths of disability. Deafblindness, if anything, has been my superpower throughout my medical training, and I feel confident and excited to utilise this in my job as a soon-to-be Doctor. _ Contrary to what some insist. I thus do not exist just to tick the ‘diversity’ box. We absolutely need to charge this narrative. Either way, I am grateful to those who have doubted me and resisted me along the way. Thanks to them, it has made me more determined, believing more in myself and my mission to graduate as the UK’s 1st deafblind doctor. It proves so much CAN be done with hard work, self-belief, and an open mind. _ #medicine #doctor #disability #healthcare #empowerment

Words from Martin… “I wish I would have been given the opportunity of using a device when I was a kid because it was so frustrating not being able to express myself.” Sometimes there’s an assumption that when SLPs introduce AAC, we are giving up on vocal communication, but it’s the exact opposite. Martin is a great model for others. Positive self-identity and autonomous communication for the win! Save this and share it with others! Video: @a_different_spectrum a_different_spectrum (TT)

This is probably one of the most powerful videos I’ve shared, in my opinion. I often get asked how autism affects Jude and Charlie differently, and this is the perfect example. Before the video, Jude was having a meltdown because we wouldn’t let him finish his math problem, which he likes to practice on a paper towel “because it’s easier.” Don’t ask. I don’t know. Charlie was having a meltdown because Billie was too loud. I gave him noise-canceling headphones, which he usually hates but tolerated today, thanks to his school, which has been working on it. He started stimming with his food instead of eating it. At this point, I was just relieved that they were both calm and happy. Pick your battles, as they say. I looked at the scene and thought the contrast was beautiful in a bittersweet way. Jude is super-duper verbal, and most people don’t see the autism in him. Charlie, on the other hand, is obviously autistic. I don’t care how taboo it is to say. Within 10 seconds of being around Charlie, you know. He’s nonverbal with challenging behaviors and intellectual disabilities. Yet they share the same diagnosis, and that’s why levels are important. They don’t tell the whole picture, but they’re a good indicator and can help with getting the proper support and services.
