For 40 years, Project Open Hand has been serving medically tailored meals and groceries to critically ill neighbors across the Bay Area, producing over 1 million meals each year. Making hand art

It was December 29, 2022, when the first idea of The Hands Project began to take shape. Now, standing at the end of April 2026, I look back and see how much this project has grown alongside me. What started as a small, quiet step has now become a collection of 90 hand castings. To reach this number, there were so many moments behind the scenes. From the polite noes to the welcoming yeses, and even the bittersweet goodbyes of those who had to leave the project, I realized I have shared more emails and texts than I ever could have imagined in my ordinary routine. I truly treasure every person I met through this journey. I love the stories behind their hands and the lives they have built with them. My heart especially warms when they visit me with their completed backboards, or even when they reach out with a simple question or request. It makes me realize how much I care about this community. To all the hands that have worked so hard to complete this project, and to those who are still thoughtfully working on their pieces, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you all. #Please know that I am always here, waiting for your completed boards and your email replies with a happy heart.
