This activity may look simple, but it’s doing so much more than just walking. Balancing on a narrow surface while moving a chair forward challenges the child’s core stability, coordination, and motor planning at the same time. By adding an object to carry or push, we increase focus, body awareness, and engagement—making the activity more functional and meaningful. This is how Occupational Therapy works— Turning simple movements into powerful learning experiences ❤️#Proprioceptive #balance #attention #parenting #occupationaltherapy

Ever noticed your child constantly jumping, crashing into things, or giving unusually tight hugs? It might not be “bad behavior” — it could be proprioceptive stimming. Proprioceptive stimming is a way some children seek deep pressure or body input to feel calm, focused, or in control. It helps regulate the proprioceptive system — the part of the sensory system that tells us where our body is in space, how much force we’re using, and how we’re moving. When a child’s body doesn’t get enough of that input, they may try to create it themselves — by jumping, crashing, hitting, or pushing. It’s their nervous system asking for balance, not their mind asking for attention. And often, they don’t even realize they’re doing it just feels “right” in the moment. It’s not about being aggressive or defiant — it’s about meeting a sensory need. Understanding the “why” behind these actions can help us respond with support, not correction. 💛 Save this post as a gentle reminder: Sometimes what looks like behavior is really regulation. 🌟 How the Proprioceptive System Helps in Development: 1. Improves Body Awareness 🔸️Helps children know where their body is without looking 🔸️Supports activities like dressing, navigating through spaces, or playing sports 2. Supports Motor Planning and Coordination 🔸️Allows kids to plan and carry out smooth, coordinated movements 🔸️Essential for tasks like writing, cutting, climbing, or catching a ball 3. Develops Strength and Endurance 🔸️Proprioceptive feedback helps children understand how much effort or pressure is needed (e.g., holding a pencil, pushing a door) 4. Regulates Emotions and Behavior 🔸️Deep pressure or resistance input from proprioceptive activities can be calming or organizing 🔸️Helps children with self-regulation, focus, and attention in busy or challenging environments 5. Improves Safety and Spatial Orientation 🔸️Proprioception helps prevent bumping into objects or people 🔸️Encourages safe exploration and movement ❇️ Signs of Proprioceptive Difficulties: 🔸️Clumsiness or frequent crashing into things 🔸️Using too much or too little force (e.g., breaking crayons, writing too lightly) 🔸️Seeking heavy work like jumping, pushing, or climbing excessively 🔸️Poor motor control or awkward movements ❇️ In Occupational Therapy: Proprioceptive activities are commonly used to help regulate sensory processing and improve motor control. Examples: 🔸️Pushing/pulling heavy objects 🔸️Jumping, climbing, or animal walks 🔸️Carrying weighted items 🔸️Resistance activities like tug-of-war or therapy putty . . . . . Growing up, we all learn about the 5 senses. 👀👃👂👄✋ 🤯 But did you know that there are actually 8 sensory systems? The three lesser-known sensory systems are the vestibular system, the interoceptive system, and the proprioceptive system. 👉Proprioception gives us awareness of the force of our movements and the position of our body parts. It helps us know where our body parts are and how they’re moving, even if we’re not looking at them (e.g. climbing stairs without having to look at our feet). 💪This is all due to receptors in our joints and muscles that are activated with the stretch and compression that happens during everyday movements like… 🤩Jumping, stomping, crashing, and tackling! When we see kids who are constantly seeking out these movements, we can guess that their bodies and brains need MORE proprioceptive input in order to find a “just right” feeling where they can focus, concentrate, and attend. ➡️➡️➡️Want to check out some of our favorite proprioceptive activities? Group session activity of dragging a ball through a bat in a maze-like pattern can offer several benefits for special children, targeting both motor and cognitive development & Swinging a special child in a blanket can provide various sensory and developmental benefits. This activity can be both calming and stimulating, offering therapeutic value in several ways: 👉Improves Fine and Gross Motor Skills 👉Enhances Hand-Eye Coordination 👉Develops Focus and Attention 👉Promotes Problem-Solving Skills 👉Encourages Bilateral Coordination 👉Encourages Visual Tracking 👉Swinging provides vestibular input (sense of balance and movement) 👉The rhythmic motion of swinging in a blanket can have a soothing effect on an autistic child 👉Swinging helps develop the vestibular system, which plays a key role in balance and coordination. 👉The pressure of the blanket and the movement involved help the child understand where their body is in space, improving proprioceptive input. 👉After sensory input from swinging, many children with autism show improved focus and attention. . . . . #groupsession #occupationaltherapy #focus #attention #balance #movement #proprioceptive #vestibular #coordinationactivity #soothingeffect #visualtracking #problemsolvingskill #bilateralcoordination #finemotor #grossmotor #calming #sparklechildtherapycentre #explore #explore #autism #reels #instagramreels

Here are 2 different ways to provide #vestibular and #proprioceptive input. Depending on each child's individual nervous system, and while always using the "Just Right" approach by meeting children where they are (not where we want them to be). This is how we as OTs, choose what is right for each one of our kids when playing and engaging with them. And remember to always make it Playful & Fun! #occupationaltherapy #sensoryintegration #proprioception #mororeflex #lycraswing #swissball #organization #breathing #fearparalysis

KIDS DONT NEED MORE TOYS THEY NEED MORE MOVEMENT !!! What kind of movement ? Movement that makes them Climb Jump Crawl Hang Rotate Bounce Crash Balance Movement that makes them challenge their body is the kind of movement they need to understand the world around them. This looks like simple play everyday ,but it is not just play it's called body regulation. What is in your house that gives them such opportunities? Do you have something in your home that They can climb onto ? They can crash on ? They can jump from ? They can bounce on ? They can rotate from ? They can hang on to ? They can balance on ? Most homes are now including a space for children to do all that mentioned above.. As our children don't need more n more stuff that occupies space but stuff that gives them the necessary sensory input required for body regulation and to build their nervous system. Dm us if your want to build a play room for your kids.. that's where our expertise comes in. #letsticklesensoryandmore #letstickle2026 #kidshomegym #vestibular #proprioceptive

Does your child become upset and disregulated after school? It’s tempting to sit them in front of the tv, but what do they really need? They need to jump, swing, roll, crash, hang upside down... they need deep pressure in those muscles and joints and they need to get moving. More and more children are expected to be still and we as society are becoming reliant on screens to help regulate them when things get tough BUT kids with high energy and high sensory needs often need more proprioceptive input to feel calm. This is also known as sensory seeking behaviour. You can replicate this type of play with your little one by allowing them to carry a heavy back pack, push a full basket across the floor, perform wall push ups, and plenty of rough and tumble play. If you give this a try and apply this type of play every day directly after school you will feel like you have a completely different kid and your child will be so much happier for the rest of the day!
