Prune these before Spring! 👉🌹🌳🍎🍐🌺 The aim of pruning in winter is mainly to encourage vigour and productivity in fruit trees and flowering plants, and to ensure that shrubs such as buddleja don’t outgrow their space or take over. So here are 5 things you may have in your garden that you should prune back in February, if you already haven’t… Fruit trees and bushes 🌳🍎 To promote healthy fruit production, I remove all decaying and overlapping branches and aim to create a wine glass shape with plenty of airflow in-between. But Leave stone fruit like plums until summer. Wisteria 🌿 Wisteria should ideally be pruned twice a year to promote proper flowering, in summer and winter, at this time of the year I prune back sideshoots to around 2-3 buds. Climbing or bush roses 🌹 I’m training these up an arch, so I leave the thick vigorous stems and cut back the thin weak ones that are out of place, as well as any dead or decaying stems. Rambling roses should be left until late summer though. Clematis 🌺 Group 3 clematis flower in late summer, so I give them a hard prune in February to around 20-30cm above the ground and remove old growth to encourage strong flowering shoots. But do check your clematis group before pruning. Buddleja or butterfly bush 🦋 Even though they often pop up unexpectedly, buddleja are a popular shrub and are loved by butterflies. They are fast growing and can easily take over a space though, so I prune mine back hard to ensure they don’t take over and to promote a display of flowers in summer. So do have any of these in your garden? 😊🌱 #gardeningtips #pruning #gardenmaintenance

Have you made this cut? 🍎✂️🌳 The most important cut in a young fruit tree 👇 • Head it between knee and hip height when young🌱 • Forces scaffold branches 6 to 8 inches below 🌿 • Keeps fruit lower and easier to reach 🙌 • Creates more side shoots and better options ✂️ • Helps keep the tree shorter long term 🍑 Skip it and your lowest branches may start way too high… one of mine is over 15ft 😅 Drop your questions below 👇 #fruittree #homeorchard #pruning #growfood #backyardgarden

✨Save and share with someone who grows limelight hydrangeas Pruning Lime Light Hydrangeas For most of the plants in my landscape I refer to the experts for their maintenance. I purchased my lime lights from @provenwinners (not a sponsored post I just love their hydrangeas). The recommended time to prune lime lights is late winter or early spring. I love the look of the dried blooms in the landscape thus I leave them as long as possible. I also use the dried blooms in Fall and Winter floral arrangements. ⚠️ Not all hydrangeas require pruning as some grow on old wood. If you are not sure please do your research and look up your plants first. I am located in zone 8a and prune as soon as I see the first sign of hydrangeas buds. This is a great time to prune as I can clearly see where to cut. The recommendation for pruning lime lights is to cut only 1/3 of the plant’s branches back. Anything more can result in weak branches and unable to hold the weightof large blooms. As lime lights bloom on new wood, over cutting can also result in little to no blooms. Using sharp and clean pruning shears, I like to cut at a 45 degree angle just above the bud. Working with heavy clay soil, I add fresh organic matter like rich organic compost and top with a balanced slow release fertilizer. If you are unsure of what fertilizer to use, I go with the one from @provenwinners since they are the grower. You can find it on their website or Amazon. Again this is not a sponsored post. I just love their plants. I hope this simple video was of some assist to someone🌱 #pruning #hydrandeas #limelight
