Do you know both ways?👇 🍒 🌳 This is another pic I received from one of the members of my course. 📷 They asked for my feedback on where to prune.✂️ Here are my suggestions. 👍 🍒 Cherry Tree 1 - Sweet Cherry - Central Leader ✅ 1. Remove several of the scaffold branches to reduce crowding 2. Head back tree to reduce height 3. Tip vigorous branches to create more side branching 🍒 Cherry Tree 2- Tart (or sour or pie ) Cherry - Open Center (or Vase) ✅ 1. Severe heading cut leaving 3-4 main scaffold branches 2.Remove inward facing branches *Given the severity of the heading cut, I may spread it across 2 seasons. (Winter and Summer). ✂️ 🙋♂️ What questions do you have on pruning? 👇 #pruning #fruittrees #fruits #growyourownfood #growingfruit #growfruit #prune #winter #seasons #homesteading #orchard #cherrytree

Cherry trees are spring bloomers so it’s best to prune within two weeks of the flowers fading. You can still prune in the summertime after that two week window, but you run the risk of cutting flower buds off for next year. You can still prune but keep in mind that you should leave a lot of stems completely untouched just in case there are buds on there for next year’s flowers. Weeping cherries can become very overgrown and touch the ground, and those stems can even form new roots and become a mess. To keep that nice natural shape we don’t want to prune every stem to the exact same length we like to use varying heights and bury your cuts under the leaves. If your tree isn’t thriving, check to see if it has “suckers” coming out of the root stock. This tree was planted in ground a few years ago, but has always been on the struggle bus for our client. In an attempt to rehabilitate it, we dug it up and potted it in premium citrus soil. Also, we noticed this particular lime tree had four thick sucker branches coming out of the rootstock. For those new rootstock, most commercial trees are grafted onto a robust rootstock. Rootstock typically refers the bottom trunk portion with establish roots that serve as a jumpstart base for a grafted variety. Rootstocks are typically more disease resistant and are vigorous growers, however the fruit is not as desirable hence grafting on a tasty variety. Every tree has a fixed amount of energy it can produce, so if there are undesirable branches, it is consuming energy that would otherwise go to flower/fruiting and branches that you do want to keep. So, here’s your sign to go check your tree at the graft union, and cut any branches that are growing from BELOW or AT the graft union. If you’re new around here, welcome!
