Pugging clay! This is a little video of me using my Mini Pugmill to process some clay that I recently reclaimed (you can see some of my previous posts for that lovely process!) When reclaiming clay, some areas end up firmer and some softer after sitting on the plaster bats, so pugging helps to even it out. I usually run the new clay logs through twice too, just to make sure it is nice and even as this certainly makes a big difference when throwing pots on the wheel. It is pretty easy to understand how it works by watching the video, I put blobs in the top and it pops out the end of the barrel. I put a piece of plastic under the log as it emerges from the barrel, to help it skid along the bench. Once finished, I store the logs in a bucket with a lid ready to use. As the barrel of the machine holds a lot of clay, I don’t want it to dry out between uses, so, after cleaning, I put a piece of damp sponge over the end and in the top and cover firmly with plastic. I then wrap it up again with more plastic. This keeps it all damp and ready for my next batch of reclaimed porcelain (it is a never-ending process.) The video is sped up quite a lot, so it is no where near this quick to use, but it does an excellent job and is quite fun. It is also very quiet as it does not de-air the clay, but I have to say I am impressed at how it comes out almost free of air bubbles. Pugging clay, it has to be done, a tedious task but a good workout nonetheless.

Pugging up some local clay, straight no mixing. Normally I have to screen local clays before pugging, as there are rocks and sticks in it. This clay though was so pure, and still damp from being deep in the earth, so it went straight into the pug mill. This clay was brought to us by a builder who dug it up in the course of making a foundation. Hopefully we will make some good pots from it. 🙏
