❌ This quad stretch is not effective. I’m going to teach two different active quad stretches that will unlock your quads and hip flexors. This is your rectus femoris muscle which is your middle quad and a hip flexor muscle. Do these active quad stretches instead. This first one is the more advanced version. Once your quads and hip flexors are maximally stretched out, you will kick your back leg into the bench, which will cause your quad muscles to contract. Hold this stretched out contraction. Next, contract your hamstring muscles by trying to bring your heel to your hips and holding this contraction. If this is too challenging try this easier version. With this version, keep your front knee on the ground. You will again perform both the kick back and heel to hip contractions as before. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗗𝗦! To make the most out of your flexibility training you need to make sure that you always train both the lengthening and shortening side of the muscle/skill. Let's say in a pike for example. The hamstrings are lengthening as we lift the leg, and the front of the thigh (quadriceps), get shorter and contract to pull the leg up. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼: 1. Increase the flexibility in the hamstrings to allow them to lengthen more. 2. Build more strength in the quadriceps to pull you deeper into the stretch. So anytime you are stretching you always want to think of this pairing between lengthening/shortening. Now we can stretch/strengthen both of those. But the most important thing is that you build both passive flexibility AND active flexibility. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗻𝗲𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 This drill is going to increase the strength in your quadriceps (extending the knee) in deep hip flexion that is similar to that one of the pike. What this does is that it teaches your quads to contract hard in order to get you into the position by locking the knee in towards the midline. I generally start with this one seated for less resistance against gravity and then progress to a pancake or seated pike position for more gravity resistance. I like two different rep/set schemes for this one: Scheme 1 → 2-3 sets x 10 reps w. 2-3s hold on each rep.
