‼️🥚We have lots of sweet little quails ready now ‼️🥚 ❓Why keep quail❓ 🐤 Quail make really interesting little pets. 🐤 They need less space than other poultry 🐤 They are really inquisitive and can become very friendly. 🐤 They are cost effective egg producers. 🐤 They start to lay at just 8-12 weeks old. 🐤 They lay amazing, tasty eggs! 👩‍🏫 Quail Information 🥚 Quail can be very productive, capable of laying 230 eggs a year. 🦅 Quail spend their time on the ground and generally only fly up vertically when frightened! They don’t generally use ramps so everything for them needs to be at ground level and they don’t use perches. 🌳 Quail love hiding under things so give them plenty of cover to go under - put branches in their run, plant pots on their side and things to hide in and under. 🍱 Quail need a high protein layers feed of around 18-20% protein and eat around 15g each day so are very cost effective to feed. 🐤 They live around 2-4 years. 🕰️ You will need lots of time just to sit and watch them do their quail things! They are fascinating to watch and are always very busy. 🛀 Quail are obsessed with dust bathing, pop a tray of fine sand in with them for hours of entertainment. Are quails cuddly like chickens? Do your quail let you handle them? I’ve been asked a few times and here’s my thoughts: 🌿 Quails are generally said to be less affectionate than chickens, a bit more skittish, preferring to hang out with flockmates, doing their own thing. I started my quail journey with these expectations, and was pleasantly surprised when my quail let me handle them, cuddle them and even pat them! Just like my chickens, how affectionate they are depends on their personality. Some of mine will happily snuggle in my hands, others prefer a quick pat only. If you want to develop a more affectionate bond with your quail: 🌿 Consider coturnix quail - they are the tamest, most domesticated of quails. 🌿 Be around them often, no sudden movements or noises, just a gentle presence. Hand feed and give them little pats. 🌿 Remember to keep your expectations in check & if they like cuddles then fabulous! And if they don’t, that’s okay too 🥰 Watching quails go about their day in their own little world is still one of the cutest things to enjoy! This makes them great for urban backyards and small spaces. 🐥 They lay little speckled eggs that are both gorgeous and delicious! Quail eggs are slightly higher in protein but are pretty much interchangeable with chicken eggs in most recipes. 🐥 Quail are very quiet, and you’re allowed to keep boys too (whereas boy chickens aren’t allowed in most urban council areas). Boy quails ‘crow’ but the sound is like a trill and isn’t loud at all! 🐥 Like chickens, they are great at eating greens and poopin’ organic fertiliser for your garden. My quails live in a deep litter pen, which means that their valuable poop mixes with the bedding to make compost for me to use too! 🐥 They’re just so bloody cute and fun to have around!!
