Here's why this works: Without an offer: "I think I deserve more" = your opinion (ignored) With an offer: "Someone valued me at $____" = market data (requires response) I've overseen $40M+ in production budgets. Here's what happens in those VP conversations: Manager: "Sarah wants a $15K raise." VP: "Does she have another offer?" Manager: "No." VP: "Give her 3%. If she's really unhappy, she'll leave and we'll replace her." vs. Manager: "Sarah has an offer for $95K. We're paying her $80K." VP: "Can we afford to lose her right now?" Manager: "No. The big campaign launches in 6 weeks." VP: "Match it." The framework (4 steps): 1 Get real offers - Interview at 2-3 companies. Don't bluff. Actually get written offers. 2 Pick your timing - Use this leverage when they CAN'T afford to lose you (mid-project, before launch, during peak season). 3 Use this script: "I've received an offer for $____. I'd prefer to stay here, but I need to match the market rate. Can we make that work?" 4 Be ready to walk - If they don't match or get close, take the other offer. If they call your bluff and you stay, you'll never have leverage again. Copy/paste script for the conversation: "Quick heads up, I've been approached about a role at [company] offering $____. I'm not actively looking, but the comp is significantly higher than where I'm at now. I love working here and would prefer to stay, but I need to be realistic about market rates.
