Re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere is one of the most dangerous phases of any space mission. A returning spacecraft hits the atmosphere at over 25,000 km/h, compressing air in front of it until friction heats the exterior to around 1,650°C — hotter than molten lava. The vehicle depends entirely on its heat shield and a precise entry angle. Come in too steep and g-forces spike while the craft risks burning up. Too shallow and it can skip off the atmosphere like a stone on water, stranding the crew in orbit. With plasma blocking radio signals during the worst of it, the crew flies blind for several minutes. What sounds like knocking inside a spacecraft is actually a very important part of coming home. As this crew enters Earth’s atmosphere, small rockets on the spacecraft fire in short bursts. These are called re‑entry thrusters, and their job is to guide the capsule safely back to Earth. From inside, the astronauts hear them as a steady knocking sound, almost like someone tapping on the walls. These thrusters carefully adjust the angle of entry. If the spacecraft enters too steep, it could overheat. If it enters too shallow, it might skip back into space. The firing happens in short pulses, which is why the sound feels rhythmic and physical inside the cabin. Even though the noise can be surprising, it is actually reassuring. It means the spacecraft is doing exactly what it should. The thrusters protect the heat shield, control the path through the atmosphere, and help bring the crew safely toward splashdown.
