How to recycle fired ceramics at your studio? When you have pieces that you’re not happy with, don’t throw them in a bin. Here’s a way to repurpose them as filler for a clay body. And it helps to save some raw materials! 1. Select shards that you want to recycle. For this example I’m using stoneware bisque. 2. Use protective gloves, glasses and mask. The process is dusty and shards can be very sharp! 3. Put the shards into a piece of cloth. 4. Crush them with a hammer. The smaller the pieces the better. 5. Grind the broken pieces. I’m using a DIY angle grinder extension, but corn grinder, pestle & mortar or rock crasher will do the work too, 6. Sieve the ground shards to desired grain size. 7. Chips can be added to plastic clay body as grog, making it stronger and firing to a higher temperature. 8. Powder can be added to casting slip, see how. It also makes the cup stronger and the cup can be made thinner as a result. 9. Substitute about 30% of your casting slip with the ground ceramic powder. Add water and deflocculant if necessary. Recycled powder doesn’t absorb as much water as clay, adjust amount of water accordingly. 10. Pour as usual, but mind that recycled slip settles faster, so you cay need to cut you usual settling time. 11. Clean, dry and fire as usual. Test shrinkage and porosity if needed. 12.
