This is an Eastern Red Bat, female. Her name is Hope. She is super tame with me, as she knows me and im her caretaker PSA. Bats native to North America are all ‘Microbats’ they are small and insectivores. All large bats that are located over other parts of the world are known as “Megabats”. Microbats are the ones that use echolocation , Megabats dont (with a couple of exceptions). All bats roost hanging 🙃 upsidedown. Why? Because bats have to “drop” to be able to fly, as they cannot jump up like a bird & take fight. If a bat gets “grounded” they cannot physically just jump up and fly away. They have to climb up something and jump off it in order to fly away. So a grounded bats doesnt mean they’re sick. Thats a myth. How are they able to stay alive hanging upside down so much? They have special ‘pumps’ in their body like humans have to pull the blood out of our lower body and bring it back to our heart. Bats have those but they pull the blood from their head back to their heart and lower extremities! Their back feet are made to naturally grip things to hang upside down. It is as natural for them to do that as it is for us to stand up on our legs, which is another thing bats cant do. They use their back feet like we’d use our hands. When they get an insect to eat they use their back feet to hold it and they tuck their head between their very short back legs and use the membrane that’s between their back legs to prevent the insect from flying off. #bat #bats #education #wildanimals #psa #redbat #kentucky #londonky
