I made this last night to promote my new animation classes on other platforms! 🤓 Figured I’d share it here with some thoughts I had as I put it together! The audio comes from a trend where you pair the sound with something onscreen to match the vibe; mine was “when animation students finish 4 years and still can’t get an industry job”, so Zelda is playing the stand-in for anyone in that position. I love doing these little lip sync exercises! Facial animation is one of my favorite things to work on and having a really short time challenge helps me to fight against my perfectionism, try things / make decisions quickly, and practice different workflows to copy + paste curve data between controls to connect parts of the body to the main actions I block out. Since I try to keep the actions fairly subtle, it also makes me think about things like breath and lets me develop opinions about various little tools I like to experiment with along the way. Since this rig doesn’t have IK elbows locks, I had to use the bend controls to simulate that effect using some animBot XForm baking, as well as using Temp Pivot to have her hand stay around her face but pivot from her elbow on the table. Using a variety of rigs helps me to find different solutions depending on how ‘good’ the character is so that I’m that much more helpful when making YT videos, teaching classes, or answering comments without being able to open up someone’s shots. A few last little details for fun, I added some vibration in the highlights near her pupils (as always when I use this rig or Link’s), and I was creating Studio Library mouth poses as I blocked out a few shapes so I could create my own custom library macros to give me a slider for “lip zipper” for example, since I didn’t have blend shapes for those features. I also tried to keep “football mouth” to a minimum, opting for a flat lower lip on large shapes. I think it’s more appealing and graphic. Lastly, tongue animation is important when it comes to dialogue-you have to keep in mind *how* we make the sounds that we do, and the tongue is a big part of that.
