𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 @trauma_therapists 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 Sometimes, when clients experience trauma or dissociation, parts of them regress not because they’re weak, but because those younger parts have been carrying pain for years, quietly and loyally. One of the ways I gently help clients reorient is through a simple metaphor: the car keys. You see, I’ll hold out an imaginary set of keys and ask, “Who’s taking the wheel today?” Is it the child part of you scared, reactive, overwhelmed? Or is it the adult in you resourced, present, grounded? We cannot go into the world, get behind the wheel, navigate our relationships, our responsibilities, or even our choices from a child state. It’s not about suppressing that part. It’s about letting the adult lead, while the child part is seen, heard, and held with care. So much of healing isn’t about “fixing” ourselves.
