How do we support our community during a crisis? Let’s get Smarter in Seconds! A community is any collection of people who support or care for one another and may share geography, identity, or experiences. You might not know or look like everyone in your community, but if you’re alive, you’re probably part of one! Helping after a crisis can take countless forms. Think about what you do best or what you enjoy doing and how you can apply that to supporting your community. Do you love to cook? Cook and deliver meals or join a meal distribution service. Do you love to read? Offer to host a storytime or join a book drive. Donations are also a vital part of community support - but remember a crisis is not the time to clear your closet or pantry of trash that’s been gathering dust. Think locally, too. Supporting disasters in another state or country is an IMPORTANT and beautiful thing to do, but remember to also think about what’s happening in your own neighborhood. I'm currently working on a research project on an underserved group and the impact community resources can have on their health. While sometimes we tend to think "oh, they need our help" or "there's "all these issues we have to address," that is not always the case with underserved groups. I remember a speaker coming to our school and telling us, "just ask the people!" Ask the community where services, assets, or resources are for whatever you're looking for. That's exactly what I am doing with my project. The resources already exist!
