So this is Cadbury The eagle-eyed amongst you may notice he is not a lurcher or a puppy, however he is semi-retired and comes to me from @mordorgundogs He is slowly settling in and getting used to living with a spaniel, he is going to be used for picking up and on the day, so I can let Ci be a spaniel and both of them enjoy working together. We are learning a lot from each other and I think he is going to have an excellent life in North Wales I am incredibly grateful to the team at Mordor for trusting me to look after Cadbury and give him a lot of adventures, this is going to be a steep learning curve but one I am really looking forward to and I can't wait to see him picking up and working on a shoot Having him and key working together and living together is the priority and so far things are going well. These are breed specific - see below for why 👇 🐾 Drop - Spaniels have been bred for generations to pick things up and hold on to them. They will do this throughout their entire lives. We didn’t breed letting go in. So we need to teach them this as young as possible 🐾 Retrieves - ‘bring everything you have in your mouth towards me and let go’ not only is this a fun way of interacting, but it gives Spaniels an outlet to do what they are bred to do - so, done in the right way retrieves can be very calming, they also help to prevent resource guarding and playing keep away with items 🐾 This Way - u turn, change direction now. As they get older this becomes ‘the hunting is happening in the other direction’ ( much more useful than recall), but with puppies ‘this way’ can be a great alternative to teaching a ‘leave it’ too. I’ve yet to work with a Spaniel who doesn’t really love a good ‘this way’ 🐾 Eye contact - suuuupppper important. Especially outdoors, every time the environment changes (a noise happens, a dog appears, a person appears etc ) = check in with me which is rewarded with a treat. The key to Loose lead walking, recall, focus on walks is eye contact 🐾 Walking calmly on a lead. Start early. Teach them that when they are on a lead we are walking together. That we are not ‘ hunting’ the reality of this is it is months of work. There are no quick fixes. And there can be so many factors involved including arousal levels, pain, diet, breed needs not being met, anxiety and simply that Spaniels are bred to move really quickly covering ground ahead of us - not to walk slowly in a straight line. Be patient 🐾 Switching off. Nothing is happening. Spaniels don’t come with an off switch 😉 we need to teach them this. Perfect for weary or pressured fish and cold conditions, and a critical and often overlooked feature when sight fishing. On the flip side, you can really crank up the retrieve speed and the tail only thumps harder and swings wider. Perfect when the feed is aggressive and the temps are high!

When your retrieves are looking like this… 19 weeks old tomorrow and his first time retrieving with another person present. What a ‘normal’ walk with my 3 working spaniels looks like ✨ I don’t actually want to do calculated training sessions with the girls every single day, If I find that boring and difficult to do myself then they must do as well, so 3/4 days a week they get a good run to stretch their legs BUT this doesn’t mean that we just run and that’s it! Basics, manners and switched on ears are still expected! So I thought I’d share what one of these more normal walks can look like 😊 personally I find the dogs having time to decompress and just be dogs goes a long way in how receptive they are for training sessions ☺️
