❓️Why Do Romani and Kurdish Have Common Words? There are two reasons for this: 1️⃣ Common Origin of the Languages. The Romani and Kurdish languages belong to the Indo-Iranian group of the Indo-European language family. Both come from a common ancestor — the Proto-Indo-Iranian language, which existed around the 5th–3rd millennium BCE. At the beginning of the 2nd millennium BCE, this ancient language split into two branches: • Proto-Indo-Aryan (from which all modern Indo-Aryan languages, including Romani, eventually originated). • Proto-Iranian (the precursor to all modern Iranian languages, including Kurdish). If we compare languages to family members, Kurdish and Romani can be seen as third cousins. They have the same great-grandfather but developed separately for many generations. 2️⃣ Historical Migration and Contacts. After the ancestors of the Romani people left India around the 5th century CE, they lived for several centuries in the Sassanid Empire, where various Iranian languages were spoken. During this time, the Romani people borrowed many words from these languages. Even after moving through the Byzantine Empire and Europe, these words remained in the Romani language to this day.
