🌱 Did you know this about LECA? IMO and experience with semi-hydro, LECA pebbles are perfect for growing plants with chunky roots (think Monsteras & Anthuriums). But, the pieces are just too big to grow plants with fine, delicate root systems like Philodendrons, Hoyas, Ferns, Pilea, etc. For these plants, I recommend growing in a horticultural rock like Lechuza Pon instead. I actually think a wood trellis is more like how they grow up trees in their natural environment. And... well, I don’t have any trouble getting my Monstera’s to size up without moss poles 😆. The Monstera roots are able to attach themselves to the Zella (as you can see at the end of the video) and at some point I didn’t even need to velcro it on anymore. https://youtu.be/daSdKIrbdc8 This video show you how I up pot my seedlings from their seed starting trays to 32oz cups with drainage holes 2 inches up the side. #shorts The 32oz cups allow my plants to develop extensive root systems without becoming root bound. I’m showing examples of how this root training system works as compared to plants started in seed starting cells.. Allowing the seedlings the extra space leads to faster and more vigorous growth, resulting in healthier and more productive plants. Because the root system is more developed the seedlings are less likely to experience transplant shock when moved to the garden. and the plants are better equip to handle the stress of the summer heat.

To avoid trapping air during setup, I should've added more water gradually while layering the substrates. This allows water to saturate each layer evenly and displace air effectively, but it still has a chance of trapping gas. My hope: 1. Aquatic plants with deep root systems (like the Cryptocoryne Tiger I have in there) can help displace trapped air and oxygenate deeper layers of the substrate through root respiration. 2. Snails can burrow into the substrate, aerating it and releasing trapped air or gases. 3. Beneficial bacteria colonizing the substrate will gradually consume organic matter and help maintain aerobic conditions if oxygen is available.
