As a child, Ryan lived with hemophilia, a condition that already taught him pain before life ever did. In 1984, at only thirteen years old, contaminated blood treatments infected him with HIV. Doctors told him he had six months to live. Six months to say goodbye to a world he had barely entered. But what hurt more than the diagnosis was what came after. When Ryan tried to return to school, parents protested. Teachers resisted. Classrooms closed their doors to him, not because he was dangerous, but because ignorance was. Even as doctors explained that HIV could not be spread through desks, air, or friendship, fear spoke louder than science. Ryan became a child exiled not by disease, but by misunderstanding. A long legal battle followed, turning his young life into a courtroom argument and his childhood into a public spectacle. The media found him. America watched him grow up too fast. Ryan lived five years longer than doctors predicted. Five extra years of hope, resistance, and grace. But in April 1990, before he could graduate high school, his body finally gave in. He was eighteen. Ryan White is remembered not for how he died, but for how he lived. As a boy who showed a nation that the real epidemic was fear, and the cure had always been understanding. Today, we remember Ryan White, whose grace, bravery, and determination helped change perceptions and pave the way for progress in the mission to end AIDS. Diagnosed in 1984 at the age of 13 and given just six months to live, Ryan defied the odds and became a symbol of resilience and hope. Ryan was Elton’s inspiration and motivating force to starting @ejaf. Though Ryan tragically passed away 34 years ago on April 8, 1990, his legacy lives on in the Ryan White CARE Act, which provides essential HIV-related services to over 50% of people living with HIV in the US annually – about a half million people.
