Did you know many sailfish can change colors? 🐠🌈🐟 Sailfish are among the fastest fish in the ocean, they can reach about 68 mph (110 km/h) in short bursts. They belong to the same family as marlins. Sailfish are among the fastest fish in the ocean, but their hunting strategy is more about finesse than brute force. They often raise their large dorsal fin (the “sail”) to act as a hydrofoil, allowing for incredibly tight turns and stability at high speed. As the sailfish approaches the shimmering bait ball, it doesn’t charge straight in; it makes a controlled approach, then accelerates into a single, clean lateral slash with its bill. The physics of that slash is key. It’s a side-to-side whip, not a spear thrust. The goal is to stun or disorient a few fish at the edge of the school, breaking them away from the collective defense. You can see the bait ball itself “dent” and recoil like a living fluid, with a panic wave spreading through the group. A few stunned sardines are left drifting with a slight wobble—easy targets. The capture is clean: the sailfish circles back in a tight arc and scoops one up.
