This is a project close to my heart! Sailing has been on the chopping block as an Olympic sport for awhile and when I ask people about the sport of sailing in general, they confuse it with other water sports or call it a hobby. I might not be able to change everyone’s perception on the sport but I am looking forward to 1. simplifying the sport 2. giving access to sailing through social media 3. creating a one-stop-shop for sailing tips tricks and resources. I’ll also be highlighting sailing experts and their resources that sailors can reach out to. I won’t have all the answers and my methods aren’t for everyone, but it’ll be fun and exciting. Did you know that sailing is one of the cheapest hobbies or means of travel out there. To get started, you don't even need a boat (heck, even I don't own a boat and I sail like half of the year). See, there's a lot of people out there with boats who don't want to sail alone. This is where you can come in, joining them for free in exchange for some company or help sailing the boat. Two sailboats with large square-top sails glide toward each other across open water in a tight close-quarters encounter. Their sails line up directly on a collision course as the gap closes fast. The starboard boat holds its steady course without turning while the port boat makes a last-second attempt to swing away. The sails smash together on impact, causing the port boat’s sail to crumple and bend sharply under the force. The starboard boat sails straight onward completely unaffected, its sail staying fully upright and intact. The camera tracks the full action dynamically from a side angle, showing both boats in their entirety against the calm sea under bright daylight before the starboard vessel pulls clear ahead. When square top sails charge straight at each other, only one rule decides the winner. Two boats close the gap fast on open water with zero room for error. The starboard side never flinches while the other scrambles too late. Sails collide hard, folding one dramatically as the winner powers through untouched. What you see is called a ,,wand”. It is the height control system on the Moth and few other foiling boats. As it skims the water surface, it moves a rod connected to the flap on the main hydrofoil. When the boat rises too high, the wand lifts and reduces the flap angle, which reduces lift. When the boat drops closer to the water, the wand pushes down and increases the flap angle, creating more lift. This constant feedback keeps the boat flying at a stable height while foiling. #sailing #foiling #smooth #satysfying
