Flaming Geyser State Park- Auburn, WA The salmon have returned in high numbers to spawn and it is so spectacular to watch. (Video: Nov 10, 2024) Remember that this is part of their life cycle. It is sad to see so many dead salmon, but this is how it happens. This provides lots of food for eagles, bears, and other animals leading into winter. Do not step in the stream or disturb the fish. They are spreading their egg and sperm in the hopes of success for another generation of salmon. You can see the pink pearly eggs in the water if you look closely! Spot the Kokanee Salmon spawning at Sutherland Falls! Columbia River Kokanee are landlocked fish that never make their way to the ocean. They spawn in freshwater lakes and rivers. During spawning the males turn bright red while the females have a dark red hue. “Almost dead yesterday, maybe dead tomorrow, but alive, gloriously alive, today.” In order to live, salmon die. Well, in order for their collective existence to continue, salmon must die. Salmon are semelparous, meaning they reproduce once in their life and after they do, they die. Their bodies are broken, actively rotting away and decaying. It’s a sight to see - disturbing and unsettling for many. Rivers smell of decaying fish during this time, until the salmon have decomposed into the soil. Pacific salmon spawning and death is a wonderful, natural phenomenon that feeds so many species, from trees, to bears, to humans. It is critically important for the entire ecosystem, and so beautiful in its own right. Some salmon swim thousands of miles upstream to lay eggs. But every year, their ancient journey is more and more treacherous. As climate change heats up rivers and melts snowpacks, salmon lose access to viable spawning habitat and face lethal water temperatures. Mining projects, urban development, and pipelines threaten spawning habitat. Pollution impacts salmon at every life stage. Unsustainable fisheries reduce populations. Salmon are life. This is a fish ladder. Salmon and trout instinctively swim upstream against the current, seeking ideal spawning habitats. This stair-like structure simulates the natural flow of the river, allowing fish to leap up and over the three-foot-tall “stairs” into the weir facility.

Wanna see something cool! This is a King-Of The-Salmon-Fish! A variety of Ribbon fish I’ve only caught two times in my career. Today being one of them. I had to look back when the first time I caught this type of fish was and it was in August of 2013. I caught the first one right on top of the Bishop Seamount which is about 4 miles North of the current body of water I’m working. Its name comes from the Makah people who inhabited around the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the Pacific Northwest. Right on the US and Canada border. Legend says that this fish leads the salmon home to the annual spawning grounds. For this reason catching or eating king-of-the-salmon was forbidden amongst their people. It was believed killing one of these fish would stop the salmon run. What also makes this catch so interesting is this fish is thousands of miles from it’s normal grounds. Interesting behaviour from this spawning female Atlantic salmon as she rises to the surface and forcibly gulps air. With the sound on you can even hear the pressure. So why is she doing this? Atlantic salmon have a gas-filled ‘swim bladder’. This is a hydrostatic organ that allows them to remain neutrally buoyant in water. As a Physostome, the Atlantic salmon has a pneumatic duct connecting its swim bladder to its alimentary canal. This allows the fish to regulate gas pressure in its swim bladder by swallowing air or by releasing it via the gut (mouth or anus). This fish has likely become negative buoyant during the strenuous spawning process and so is simply rising to the surface for a top up of air.
