It’s understandable why this is the city’s most popular site. Honestly we were not expecting how much it was going to blow our minds with its beauty 😍 From the outside, it looks like one massive stone wall. From the inside, it feels like you’ve entered a city within a city. We thought we were going for 1-2 hours and ended up staying for 3 😅 Here’s why you can’t skip it: ✨it’s a city within a city Founded in 1579, this monastery once hosted cloistered nuns from wealthy Spanish families. They lived in colourful “streets” within the complex, with private quarters, kitchens, courtyards and plazas hidden behind its walls. ✨The colors are unreal Deep blues, burnt orange, bright reds - all against white volcanic stone! Every corner looks hand-painted. ✨The history is fascinating For centuries, the nuns lived almost completely cut off from the outside world. In the 1970s, it opened to the public as a museum and remains frozen in time. There are still about 20 nuns there, but they live in a more modern complex inside it and don’t interact with the public. You’ll also learn a lot about the history of the city 🌆 🌳Plaza de Armas There’s always something going on here! Make sure to visit during the day and one time during the night. It’s beautiful and we loved it! You can enter the Kathedral in the morning between 7-10 am or afternoon between 17-19 pm. Have a drink at Waya to have a beautiful view of vulcano Misti and the plaza with sunset. ⛪️Santa Catalina Monastery One of the biggest monasteries of the world, a “city within a city,” is an amazing visit for photography but even more interesting with a guided tour. Which you can do for €2.50 per person. Just go in and they will get you a tourguide. 💀Museo Santuarios Andinos At this museum you’ll learn about the children who got sacrificed by the Inca’s. They found preserved Inca mummies on a mountain. Take a tour here as well and you’ll learn a lot about the Inca culture. You can’t take any photos or videos. 🌅Visit these viewpoints Yanahuara Viewpoint: beautiful arches framing the Misti vulcano with sunset. Carmen Alto: Panoramic views of the Chili River valley and terraces. A bit more out of the centre; we combined it with the Ruta Sillar. 🚣🏽Rafting in the Chili River We loved this activity! One of the best things to do to kick your adrenaline in! Everything was perfectly organized and it was a lot of fun and not too expensive (€15 pp). 🍴 Food & Drink in Arequipa ☕ Berakah Cafe 🥪 Puku Puku 🍨 Queso Helado Doña Rosa 🧇 Oso Café 🌶️ Picantería La Mundial & La Capitana 🥐 Masamama Bakery 🥣 Eco Brunch 🍝 Pasta Canteen 🥖 Tiana Cafe 🍮 La Canasta 🛏 Where to Stay Qema: they have an amazing garden and an heated pool.
