Then join me in the garden this month for ‘Seed Saving September’ as I harvest, process, and store seeds from some of our favourite plants from the vegetable garden. 😊🍅🫘🥒🌽 Because seed saving isn’t just about saving a little money, when we save and share seeds locally, when we share them in community libraries, at seed swaps, or with friends and family, we decentralise the future of our food. 🤝🫘 We ensure that rare, resilient varieties aren’t just locked away in a dooms day vault, but are thriving in soil, pollinated by native bees, and nurtured by countless hands as they are inherited by many generations to come. 🌼🐝 So throughout this series, we’ll learn how to save seeds from favourites like tomatoes, beans, lettuce, carrots, garlic and more, as well as a few unconventional plants too, but in a way that’s simple and accessible. 😊👍🌱 I’ll also be sharing some of my own seed with you along the way, in the hopes that you then grow them and share some with others too. GROW FOOD FOR FREE 💚 Saving seeds is a fundamental step in becoming self sufficient, it also helps protect the diversity of our food. Imagine if everyone saved seeds from one variety this year - that could help protect so many plants! Some more tips on saving tomato seeds: Make sure you choose a nice ripe tomato from a plant that has performed well (if saving from homegrown tomatoes), this means over time you’ll be breeding a tomato that is well suited to your specific soil and micro climate. It may not be a good idea to save seeds from F1 varieties (it will say this on the seed packet) as they are hybrids, so the plant you grow won’t necessarily have the same characteristics as the tomato you saved seeds from Would you like to know how to save seeds from any other plants? Seed saving is a game changer 🌱 I’ve been saving seeds from my alien tomatoes (or should the caption say heirloom tomatoes ??🤣🤣) for a few years now. It’s wonderful to see a plant grow from a seed that you’ve saved. Not only does it save you money there are lots of other benefits too :- 🌱 - You can be selective, taking seeds from the best fruits. 🌱 - You can be really picky and choose fruits that have the colours, markings, shapes and flavours you prefer. 🌱 - Over a few years of selection your plants will acclimatise to your garden. This should mean healthier plants. Better yields. 🌱 - Sometimes you’ll get a mutation or cross pollination and maybe a new variety of your own. 🌱 - And of course you can share the love by sharing seeds. You can save all sorts of fruit and veg seeds, today I’m showing you part 1 of a small series of reels I plan to do about how I save tomato seeds. The reason I ferment the seeds is to help remove the protective gel that coats them. This gel naturally inhibits germination because in the wild it would take all winter to be washed off, ready for spring. I need to remove it now so I can save the seeds all winter. Stop Buying Marigolds 🌼👀 Marigolds are probably the most widely grown companion flower for the vegetable garden, but they can be expensive to buy, even though they are probably the easiest flower to save seed from! So, in this episode of Seed Saving September, we’re going to ensure we never have to buy them again! 😊🌼 Just allow the spent flowers to go to dry and set seed and then collect them, allow them to dry thoroughly on a tray on the windowsill and store them until next year. 😊👍 You’ll likely have far more than you’ll ever need, so they’re great to share with friends, family or at seed swaps. I also sow pluck some whilst in the garden and sprinkle them along the edges of beds where I want them to pop up again next year. So happy seed saving! Save your seeds for next year AND for gifting this holiday season! At first, I felt like saving seeds was more trouble than it was worth. But then came 2020 with seed shortages, plus I started to get hooked on this lesser known side of gardening. One of the biggest advantages of saving your own seeds is adaptability: seeds saved from plants that grew in your garden will be better adapted to continue growing in your climate and your soil. Plus, the more seeds you save, the less you must depend on outside sources. It simplifies the process (no ordering/purchasing) and reduces the risk (what if they’re out of stock/unavailable). Saving tomato seeds is so easy. Not sure why I’ve let it intimidate me for so long! I got a bunch of amazing tomatoes from a friend’s garden and decided to save a few from the best of the bunch. I picked the biggest, most flavorful, and most colorful ones in the group for saving. (Shameless plug for my son over at @wildwoods_woodcraft for the gorgeous cutting board!)❤️ Scoop seeds from a ripe tomato into a glass jar. Label the jar. Allow to sit for 2-4 days until the mush gets a mold layer on top and is fermented. The fermenting process is what breaks down the protective slime layer around the seeds. Don’t let this process go too long or your seeds will start to sprout! After 2-4 days, when you see the mold layer, add a little water and stir vigorously. Then carefully drain the gunk off of the seeds. The mold and hollow seeds will float and be easily discarded while the good seeds sink. Repeat this process until your rinse water is clear. Once seeds are clean and drained, transfer to a hard surface like a plate and label each type. Allow to dry, stirring and breaking up clumps occasionally. Do NOT dry on a paper towel, as they tend to stick and not want to come off. Once thoroughly dry, transfer to a paper envelope and label for next year’s garden! This is a great way to have fresh seeds for next year and a great way to trade favorite varieties with neighbors. It’s amazing at how much can be done in a small amount of space! The long, rectangular shape of this design may not translate perfectly to a 1/4 acre backyard lot…but it can easily be scaled and adjusted to still grow a ton regardless of the kind of space you are working with.
