Stop Buying Marigolds 🌼👀 Marigolds are probably the most widely grown companion flower for the vegetable garden, but they can be expensive to buy, even though they are probably the easiest flower to save seed from! So, in this episode of Seed Saving September, we’re going to ensure we never have to buy them again! 😊🌼 Just allow the spent flowers to go to dry and set seed and then collect them, allow them to dry thoroughly on a tray on the windowsill and store them until next year. 😊👍 You’ll likely have far more than you’ll ever need, so they’re great to share with friends, family or at seed swaps. I also sow pluck some whilst in the garden and sprinkle them along the edges of beds where I want them to pop up again next year. So happy seed saving! Saving Chilli Pepper Seeds at Home! 🌶️🌱 In this episode of ‘Seed Saving September’ we’re back in the vegetable garden saving chilli seeds! 🌶🔥 Start by choosing the ripest, healthiest chillis. Slice them open, then gently scrape out the seeds, spread them thinly on a paper bag or something similar and leave them to dry for 1–2 weeks. 😊👍 Just ensure they’re fully dry, or they might go mouldy in storage. 🌱👌🏼 Once they are, pop into a labelled envelope and store somewhere cool and dry. And next year you’ll be growing an abundance of chillies from this one little fruit! 🌶🌱🔥 The only thing to consider is that they can cross pollinate, so if you have multiple varieties in the garden and are not taking steps to avoid it, they may not be true to type when regrown. Re-Plant Carrots and Never Buy Seed Again 🥕🌱 I really enjoy growing carrots in the vegetable garden as they are more than just an edible crops! 😊🌱 They are biennial, so in their first year they produce the carrot that we eat but in their second year they produce ornamental umbels of tiny white flowers that are loved by pollinators. 🌱🐝 I direct sow my carrots and mulch heavily to aid germination, and interplant with onions to help deter carrot root fly. They grow on into mature plants and I pull them throughout the season, but I always either leave some in the ground to overwinter, or store the best ones and replant them the following season so they will then flower in their second year. The flowers then turn to seed heads, which I leave to dry and save them until the following season and the whole process starts again! 😊🌱 It is best to save seeds from several carrots of the same variety to preserve genetic diversity and only save seed from heirloom varieties, hybridised seed won’t produce seed true to breed. So that’s any with an F1 on the packet.
