Nantucket’s Bay Scallopers are still going. A year showing a rebound in a population of Bay Scallops once seemingly in free fall. When the island empties, the days get short, and winds bring cold from the north these guys start their season. On this boat, Bob and Ray DeCosta pull dredges on a cold morning. Carrying on the tradition on board Bob’s father’s original scallop boat. Salty, sandy, cold and wet. Nantucket Bay scallops are a prize worth the effort, as anybody who’s had one can attest to. With a population seeming to be on the rise, many more scallop dinners to come.

Scenes from opening day of Nantucket’s 2025-26 commercial scalloping season featuring Bruce Cowan, Marty Mack, Frank Dutra, and Mark and Manny Souza at their shanty. Last year’s season ended with fisherman landing more than 10,000 bushels of the prized shellfish for the first time since the 2017-18 season. It was highlighted by an abundance of adult scallops that prompted state and local officials to grant requests to both raise the per-day bushel limit for fishermen and extend the season to April 11th (it usually concludes at the end of March). It was also marked by cold temperatures that resulted in the loss of nearly two weeks of fishing, and the continued decline in the number of commercial scallopers active on the water. 🚨 Weekend Madness on the Water 🚨 Running trips on weekends can be brutal. Today a boat blew right through an area FULL of scallopers, completely ignoring the dive flag. Flying wide-open throttle where families are in the water is reckless and flat-out dangerous. This is why I hate weekend trips, too many people with zero regard for safety. A flag isn’t a decoration, it’s a warning that people are in the water. Ignoring it can cost lives. Weekdays? Peaceful, safe, enjoyable. Weekends?
