#DesignInProgress 🌀@sopopomo (Dan Lam) is inspired by unexpected materials. She first experimented with polyurethane foam after studying works by the iconic American sculptor Lynda Benglis. “I loved how they formed,” she says, “and their gestural quality. “The more I worked with it, the more I learned what it was capable of and how I could push it.” In many ways, Dan’s work defies description. But when she’s asked, “I usually say I make colorful, organic, drippy, playful sculptures.” The Dallas-based artist gives her pieces onomatopoeic names — blobs, squishes and drips — that describe her visual language. Here, she’s working on a wall piece for an upcoming show with @hashimotocontemporary in Los Angeles. “I’m pouring layers of resin on the piece, a process that can take a few days depending on how many layers,” she says. “Then I’m applying a pigment to achieve a satin finish.” Although Dan’s work has a synthetic look, she’s inspired by the natural world. “I also look inward for inspiration,” she says, “using my filter and intuition to let ideas flow out.” Music by @sweettalkermusic #PolyurethaneFoam #Sopopomo #sculptural #resin #LyndaBenglis

My new artwork “Dialogue” is in progress! It all started with a drawing - I sketched it for the first time about 4 months ago. I was looking at it all the time thinking that I should sculpt these guys as soon as possible. But back then, preparing for a big exhibition took up all my time, and finally — here’s the sketch! Several months of work have gone into making this unique table in our Is series. The piece is made from stack laminated Danish ash that we have carved into a shape inspired by freezing water.
