Ever heard of a colour-changing beak? A puffin’s beak changes colour throughout the year. During winter it is a dull grey shade, but in spring it shifts to a vivid orange which potentially helps them to find mates! #EarthCapture by @nathanmoine . . . . #Puffins #SeaParrots #SeaBirds

Video by @acacia.johnson | A horned puffin surveys the sea outside its nest on Round Island, Alaska. Like many seabirds, puffins are climate change indicator species—meaning that monitoring their population can give researchers insight into what’s going on in the broader marine ecosystem. They’re also simply beautiful to glimpse in the wild! Follow me at @acacia.johnson for more from Alaska and beyond. #puffin #alaska #roundisland #seabirds #wildlife

There is no place like Bass Rock - it’s one of my favourite places on our precious planet. Home to thousands of northern gannets, the moment you step foot on this small island is like stepping back in time - the smell, the noise, the chaos.... it’s electrifying! This trip was the perfect place to try out my new Canon EOS R7 and RF-S 18-150mm lens - and I loved every second of it. When I’m filming or taking photos, I genuinely forget that anything else exists except for the wildlife and the camera. This is my first mirrorless camera and the dual pixel CMOS autofocus is a game changer - tracking animal eyes as they move across the frame, making sure my images are sharp. It made life SO much easier - who’d have thought?! The combined lens and body image stabiliser was also fantastic. Gannets are known for diving into the sea from heights of 30m at speeds of up to 60mph! It’s great to finally have a camera that can keep up - thank you @canonuk! I can film in 4K, connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and even stream to YouTube too. Hope you’re all well, and spending lots of time outside getting stuck into nature. We’ve seen lots of puffins and other seabirds being washed up around the U.K. in recent weeks. It’s always difficult to see. These birds spend almost their entire lives far out at sea, surviving winter storms most of us never experience. But sometimes conditions line up against them. This is what’s known as a seabird “wreck”. A wreck usually happens when prolonged storms combine with rough seas and limited feeding opportunities. Birds burn energy faster than they can replace it. After days or even weeks of that pressure, exhaustion and starvation take their toll. What washes up on beaches is only a visible fraction of what has happened offshore. We’ve seen this before. In 2013, a major wreck affected puffins in the North Sea, including birds linked to the Isle of May colony. Monitoring afterwards showed impacts on survival and breeding, but the population recovered over time. Puffins are long-lived birds that raise only one chick a year, so recovery is slow, measured in years rather than seasons. It’s easy to feel upset when you see images of dead seabirds, and that reaction is completely natural. But there is also a circle of life element here. The ocean is a harsh place, and winter mortality has always been part of seabird ecology. The important caveat today is that storm patterns are changing. As the climate warms, storm intensity and frequency are increasing in many regions. That means events which were once occasional can start to happen more often, stacking pressure onto populations already facing challenges from prey shifts, disease, and human activity. Many puffins alive today have already survived decades of North Atlantic winters. They will return to our coasts at the end of March to breed again, filling cliffs and islands with colour and noise like they always have. #puffins #seabirds #ukwildlife #wildlifephotography #nature

📸 Photographing Puffins with the new Nikon Z6 III // Let me know your favourite shot! 😃👇 Two weeks ago, I took a trip up to the Farne Islands to test out the Nikon Z6 III with puffins. With only one hour on the island, it was a mad rush to get the content but wow, it didn’t disappoint. I will 100% be using this now as my second body, genuinely a huge fan of it. It also has a flip screen so I can shoot vertically which is ideal for me 🙌 📍 Farne Islands, Northumberland, UK 📷 Nikon Z6 III with 70-200mm & 135mm Plena 💻 For more info, head to Nikons website ✌️ _________________________ #Z6III #Nikon #NikonCreators #NikonKeepInspiring #ReadyToPerform #puffins #puffin #puffinphotography #seabirds #wildlifephotography #photography #animals #bbcearth #earthcapture #yesbbcearth #wildlifeig #wildlifeshots #discoverwildlife

It was so awesome seeing these shearwaters diving! They were so agile in the water & unconcerned about the blue & mako sharks that were nearby. Some species of shearwater are capable of diving 230 ft (70 m)! Insane 🤯 @kaimana.expeditions ✖️ @latitude.encounters #shearwater #seabird #ocean #mexico #seabirds #diving #sharkdiving

The Onychoprion fuscatus, also known as the sooty tern, arrives every year to tropical islands around the world to breed. In large colonies of thousands of birds, they lay a single egg directly on the sand. After spending most of their lives over the open ocean, these islands become an essential refuge for their life cycle. 🐦🌊 #Seabirds #SootyTern #Onychoprionfuscatus #Nature #Conservation Birds OceanLife Wildlife
