Teachers, this is how I introduce DIFFERENCE word problems in 3rd grade 👇 Before we ever subtract, we identify the schema. Is there a greater amount and a lesser amount being compared to find a difference? That question matters more than any keyword ever will. Because when students understand structure, they can: ✔ Solve consistently ✔ Tackle multi-step problems later ✔ Stop guessing based on words like “more” This is Part 1 (greater & lesser given, missing the difference). Difference problems are 1 of the 4 third grade word problem types: • Total • Difference • Change • Equal Groups If you want the full breakdown of all 4 schemas, grab my Free Guide to Math Word Problems (link in bio) Let’s teach structure, not shortcuts. 💛 #WordProblemStrategies #ElementaryMathTeacher #MathInstruction #ThirdGradeMath #SchemaBasedInstruction

Difference word problems don’t always look the same. In Part 1, we solved for the difference when the greater and lesser amounts were given. In Part 2, we flip it. Now we’re given the greater amount and the difference… and we have to find the missing lesser amount. This is where students get tripped up — not because they can’t subtract… but because they don’t recognize the structure. That’s why I don’t teach keywords. I teach students to ask: 👉 Is there a GREATER amount? 👉 Is there a LESSER amount? 👉 Are they being compared for a DIFFERENCE? When students understand the schema, they can solve any variation — even when the unknown moves. The Difference problem is 1 of the 4 third grade word problem types. Difference word problems don’t change. The missing part changes. In Part 1, we compared two amounts to find the difference. In Part 2, we’re given the difference and have to find what’s missing. That’s where keyword strategies fall apart. Because “more than” doesn’t tell you what to do. Understanding the structure does. When students learn: • Greater amount • Lesser amount • Difference They can rearrange the organizer and solve any version. I break down all 4 word problem types in my Free Guide to Math Word Problems — link in bio. #WordProblems #ThirdGradeMath #MathIntervention #ElementaryMathTeacher #MathTeachingStrategies

If your students can subtract… but freeze on word problems… It’s usually not the math. It’s the structure. Difference word problems are about comparing two amounts — not just spotting the word “more” or “fewer.” When students learn to identify: What’s greater? What’s lesser? What’s the difference? They stop guessing. I break down all 4 word problem types in my Free Guide to Math Word Problems. It’s linked in my bio. #mathteacher #elementarymath #3rdgrademath #wordproblems #mathinstruction

🧐 Why do students still struggle with word problems? It’s not the math, it’s the language. Many students can compute, but they get stuck because they don’t have a strategy to truly understand what the problem is asking. Enter Professor Barble! His step-by-step process of visual models is your secret weapon to decoding word problems, and his scaffolded journals are designed to help students build confidence as they learn the process. Our Math Word Problem Journals help students: ✅ Build essential reading comprehension skills for math problems ✅ Develop a common language for problem solving ✅ Create visual models that represent all parts of a problem Give your students the tools to finally make sense of word problems: sis4teachers.org/wordproblemjournals

Word problems aren’t just math — they’re reading and math combined. In third grade especially, many students are still developing decoding and vocabulary skills. So before they ever solve anything, they’re already working harder just to understand the problem. Then we ask them to: • figure out what’s being asked • decide what information matters • choose a strategy • and solve That cognitive load is huge. This is why word problems require an explicit approach — not luck and not keywords. 📘 I break down the framework I use to teach this in my free Ultimate Guide to Solving Word Problems. 🔗 Link is in my bio. 📌 Save this for later or share with a teammate #ElementaryMathTeacher #WordProblemStrategies #TeachingMath #MathInstruction #ThirdGradeMath

Same structure. Different missing part. This is still a TOTAL word problem. The only thing that changes is what’s missing. When students understand the structure (parts + total), they stop asking: “Is this addition or subtraction?” Because they know it’s about relationships — not keywords. Comment WP for the links!! 🥰🥰 Students will read the problem, solve by drawing or using tools, highlight the skill words, and then write the skill words. Each skill has 5 word problems. These 5 word problems will come in worksheets and google slides! The google slides will be perfect for doing the problem with students. I made 5 different versions for each problem.❤️ 1. Just the problem 2. Picture of the problem 3. Ten frame 4. Number bond 5. Number line

Schema-based instruction sounds complicated — but it’s actually simple. A schema is the structure of the story inside the word problem. In third grade, most word problems fall into just four types: • Total • Difference • Change • Equal Groups Multi-step problems aren’t new structures — they’re just combinations of these same schemas. When students learn to identify structure first, problem solving becomes logical instead of guesswork. I walk through this framework step by step in my Free Guide to Math Word Problems, available on my free downloads page. 🔗 Link in bio. #wordproblems #thirdgradeteacher #thirdgrademath #elementarymath #ignitelearningcompany
