You’ve probably seen the latest brazil nut trend on social, where people are eating these nuts for their selenium. . Selenium is a trace element that our bodies use to make DNA, protect us from infection, and metabolizing thyroid hormones. Brazil nuts happen to be the food with the highest selenium content. But does that mean that we need to eat them? . Brazil nuts are expensive, and they taste like dirt, IMO - weirdly though, they’re my favourite nut. I’m always digging through nut mixes to find the Brazils. . Aside from the cholesterol-lowering claim that this person is making (which is ridiculous, FYI - nobody’s cholesterol goes down significantly in two days, especially not because they consumed 8 nuts 🙄) there are also a lot of ‘random hormone balancing’/‘Brazils will fix your thyroid hormones claims going around. . The evidence supporting these claims is weak at best. It’s a huge red flag when someone claims that ONE SINGLE FOOD will cure or prevent a multitude of illnesses and conditions. Those lists of X food cures ALL OF THESE DISEASES are so ridiculous. . We only need around 55mcg of selenium a day, and although one Brazil nut will provide that, most people are not deficient in selenium because it’s also present in a lot of foods like meat, dairy, eggs, and grains. . Selenium can be toxic in high doses, even when consumed in food. Don’t go eating handfuls of Brazil nuts thinking that more is better. . If you aren’t deficient in selenium, taking more won’t really do anything for you. I mean, for sure - eat Brazil nuts if you want. But if you’re concerned about your hormones, see an endocrinologist. And remember: no one food is responsible for good health. It’s the overall quality of your diet that matters, also with other factors such as lifestyle (social determinants of health!) and genetics!
