📢 PSA TO WRITERS: Don’t self-publish without this information! If you’re considering self-publishing your manuscript but are still harboring a dream of traditionally publishing that book, read this first! Too often, I see writers who self-publish too early, only to regret that decision a year or two later. They then jump into major revisions and begin querying agents .. not realizing their already slim odds are now even slimmer :( The reality: 👇 - Most traditional publishers prefer first rights - Previously published books (including self-published and hybrid / vanity published) are harder to sell Why? Publishers want stories they can: - Introduce to the world - Market as new releases - Position as debuts And unless you have wildly successful self-pub stats, your self-pub sales may be a red flag for agents. 🚩 Yes, there are exceptions—books that ARE wildly successful when self published which then get picked up by traditional publishers (like Colleen Hoover’s “Slammed!”), but they’re incredibly rare. Going in with that as your goal is not the savviest path to success. It’s not about which path is “better” (traditional or self-pub) - it’s about keeping your options open! 🌟 My advice? If you’re unsure about your publishing path: 1. Don’t rush your publishing journey. 2. Take the time to make your story the best it can be *before* hitting publish, regardless of whether you’re aiming to self or traditionally publish. 3. If you’re dreaming of traditional publishing — query *before* self-publishing. 4. THEN consider self-publishing if that feels right and you are SURE you don’t want to traditionally publish this specific book (you can always query future projects!) Remember: Both paths can lead to success! Just make sure you’re making an informed choice for YOUR story. 📚✏️

If you’re wanting to publish a book this reel is for you I’m telling you, self publishing is the way to go if you are looking to self publish your own book. You have so many options now when it comes to how and who you print with. First off what’s the difference between self publishing and traditional publishing? I’m glad you asked Self Publishing is when you purchase an ISBN number and register your title on your own. Next you need to decide on a “publisher”/Printer . Traditional Publishing is something you either need to be scouted out for or something you apply for. A lot of times this requires an agent is more difficult for first time authors. Next Choose how you want to print your book In the self publishing world you can choose between Offset and POD Offset is when you print in bulk. This is what I did. ✅Pros: lower unit price, control over quality and customization, freedom to sell however you want ❌Cons: you have to store hundreds to thousands of books somewhere and do your own marketing and selling (This is what I do every time!) POD POD simply means print on demand meaning your book is printed and shipped by a company every time it’s ordered. ✅Pros: It’s a very hands off process. You are paid a small commission when it sells without upfront costs. ❌Cons: Little to no quality control, you only make about 5-10% in commissions, getting physical copies is expensive and there always seems to be a lot of technical issues. Writing advice: Writing tips for new writers 👉 Save for later! . Read intentionally. When you read a paragraph of a novel that makes you tense or delighted or fearful, question why. Think about the word choice, the sentence structure, the pacing, and everything that came in the scene before it. See how you can use these techniques in your own writing. . Practice writing short stories sometimes, even if your end goal is to write a novel. As Ray Bradbury said: “Write a short story every week. It’s not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row.” . Write primarily for yourself, especially if writing is a hobby. There’s always going to be someone who hates something. You can’t please everyone! Writers benefit from a thick skin. If you see a tweet about how your favourite trope is cliche or weird, you don’t need to cut it out of your book. There’s a market for everything, and if you write something you genuinely love, it’ll find its audience. . Try finding a writing community. There’s a link to a free writing club discord in my bio under “free resources”. Sometimes a second opinion helps a lot! . You can break as many “rules” as you like. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to writing. If a piece of advice doesn’t suit you, there’s no need to follow it. Writing tips: A pen name, or pseudonym, is a fictitious name that an author uses instead of their real name when publishing their work. Writers use pen names for all sorts of reasons such as privacy, personal preference, or to cross into another genre. Here are some tips for creating yours. ⁺₊✧ (Save for later) ⁺₊✧ CHECK GOOGLE AND SOCIALS: First of all you don’t want to pick a pen name only to find out they’re a famous w@r criminal. 💀 Beyond the obvious though, you might have a smoother ride if your pen name isn’t taken on social media. No big deal if it is, you can always modify the handle by adding “writer” or “writes” or “author” on the end, but if even THOSE are taken, consider going back to the drawing board. ⁺₊✧ CONSIDER GENRE: You don’t have to do this by any means, but readers often have certain expectations based on the genre. Your pen name can signal what sort of content readers might expect from you. A cozy romance writer might choose a name that sounds approachable and nice like Lily Summers over something like Rex Falcon. ⁺₊✧ USE AN INITIAL: This not only gives you some anonymity but it can conceal things like your gender. If this is important to you (for example, you might be writing in a genre dominated by another gender, or you’re a private person) then consider it. ⁺₊✧ HONOUR SOMEBODY: If you’re stuck, look to people you want to honour. This could be a family member, an inspirational writer, or some other icon in your life. You can take their first name, for example, or their surname (if it’s not super distinct and recognisable). Generally avoid taking their entire name unless they’re fine with that. ⁺₊✧ GET FEEDBACK: Sometimes even the smartest people miss a very very obvious drawback. Better safe than sorry! Self publishing is the route for me because I am type A and want all the control. It may be a trauma response, but too many people in life have failed me, so I would rather hire and get exactly what I want then rely on someone else to do something they promise to do and leave it up to chance. As a screenwriter, I want to control when I can get into communication with Studios if they are interested. And I don’t want an agent or publishing company getting in the way of rights.
