If you’re wanting to publish a book this reel is for you I’m telling you, self publishing is the way to go if you are looking to self publish your own book. You have so many options now when it comes to how and who you print with. First off what’s the difference between self publishing and traditional publishing? I’m glad you asked Self Publishing is when you purchase an ISBN number and register your title on your own. Next you need to decide on a “publisher”/Printer . Traditional Publishing is something you either need to be scouted out for or something you apply for. A lot of times this requires an agent is more difficult for first time authors. Next Choose how you want to print your book In the self publishing world you can choose between Offset and POD Offset is when you print in bulk. This is what I did. ✅Pros: lower unit price, control over quality and customization, freedom to sell however you want ❌Cons: you have to store hundreds to thousands of books somewhere and do your own marketing and selling (This is what I do every time!) POD POD simply means print on demand meaning your book is printed and shipped by a company every time it’s ordered. ✅Pros: It’s a very hands off process. You are paid a small commission when it sells without upfront costs. ❌Cons: Little to no quality control, you only make about 5-10% in commissions, getting physical copies is expensive and there always seems to be a lot of technical issues. I’ve written a really detailed article going in depth with every step and things to consider before starting your author journey. If you are interested in who one to print my books I’m also happy to share since it took so LONG to find a high quality printer. I want to save you some time ❤️ Comment ✨PUBLISH✨ to get a link to my free content I’ve made for you and let me know if you want a recommendation for my printer/publisher. If this was helpful make sure to stick around for self publishing content @tipsforbusinesscreatives #selfoublish #selfpublishing #selfpublishedauthor #howtoselfpublish #howtomakeabook #illustrator #childrensbookauthor #howtopublishabook #artist #childrensillustrator

📢 PSA TO WRITERS: Don’t self-publish without this informati

📢 PSA TO WRITERS: Don’t self-publish without this information! If you’re considering self-publishing your manuscript but are still harboring a dream of traditionally publishing that book, read this first! Too often, I see writers who self-publish too early, only to regret that decision a year or two later. They then jump into major revisions and begin querying agents .. not realizing their already slim odds are now even slimmer :( The reality: 👇 - Most traditional publishers prefer first rights - Previously published books (including self-published and hybrid / vanity published) are harder to sell Why? Publishers want stories they can: - Introduce to the world - Market as new releases - Position as debuts And unless you have wildly successful self-pub stats, your self-pub sales may be a red flag for agents. 🚩 Yes, there are exceptions—books that ARE wildly successful when self published which then get picked up by traditional publishers (like Colleen Hoover’s “Slammed!”), but they’re incredibly rare. Going in with that as your goal is not the savviest path to success. It’s not about which path is “better” (traditional or self-pub) - it’s about keeping your options open! 🌟 My advice? If you’re unsure about your publishing path: 1. Don’t rush your publishing journey. 2. Take the time to make your story the best it can be *before* hitting publish, regardless of whether you’re aiming to self or traditionally publish. 3. If you’re dreaming of traditional publishing — query *before* self-publishing. 4. THEN consider self-publishing if that feels right and you are SURE you don’t want to traditionally publish this specific book (you can always query future projects!) Remember: Both paths can lead to success! Just make sure you’re making an informed choice for YOUR story. 📚✏️

How much I spent to get my debut fantasy novel ready for publication as a self publishing author 📖 (I also spent money on commissioned art and a few other things. I will share a full breakdown in another video.) #author #selfpublishing #writingtips #bookstagram #writingabook

The breakdown⬇️ **This is NOT me giving advice! Every author’s budget and set of priorities is different. This is nothing more than my experience — bc this is the type of video I wish I would’ve seen before I published my book** **With this series, I pursued self-publishing from the beginning. If you’re traditionally publishing, you shouldn’t be paying a dime<3** 📘WRITING SOFTWARE: I use Word because it also doubles as my formatting software for paperbacks & hardcovers. The baseline price is $109 but look out for sales!! I was able to get lifetime access for just $30 📘EDITORS: I personally choose to pay for line/copy edits and proofreading (done by two completely different people, to get more sets of eyes on the manuscript). If I didn’t have such an amazingly talented beta reading team, I would also consider paying for developmental edits. 📘COVER DESIGN: This price can range from around $50 to literal thousands. Look around on IG, on the web, and don’t be hasty. The cover is so important! 📘MAP: *not necessary!* I personally always knew I wanted a map at the front of my book. If this isn’t your cup of tea, no worries. It’s not a necessity :) 📘ISBNs: This also isn’t completely necessary — while your book will need an ISBN, most companies (Amazön KDP, Ingram, etc) will provide you a free ISBN. But to have the number match across publishing platforms, you’ll have to purchase your own from Bowker 📘ATTICUS: This is how I format my ebooks. There are other platforms out there, but I like this one! (forgot to include) 📘COPYRIGHT: In the US, your work is copyrighted from the second you write it. However… max protection is good. This costs $65ish 💸 I hope this helps if you’re like my past self and want a sneak peek into publishing costs! I could’ve done this cheaper, and I could’ve done it more expensive. Don’t take as anything more than one person’s experience. You’ve done literally all of the work, let me help you get your book out there! It’s been a while since I’ve supported indie authors and self published authors and it’s something I have really wanted to get back into. My account grew quite quickly after I started it, so the time that I took connecting with authors turned into trying to keep up with the next big thing and I want to get back to my roots. I’m not looking for PR, I truly would like to purchase and support your work! I have seen such power of social media of someone reading a book that they had never heard of and it exploding online, and I just want to do what I can to get your book out there! If you are interested, please comment below your “elevator pitch” of your book. I’ll pick one every month, buy your book, read it, and work with you on a review with however you are comfortable! Please feel free to share this with your author friends, support the books that you’ve read and loved, and also use it as a way to pick your next read!!!! #bookstagram #indieauthor #selfpublishing #indiebooks #authorscommunity

First draft

1. Stop worrying so much about your first draft. First drafts are meant to be messy. No matter what publishing path you choose, your book should go through a lot of editorial and will change for the better. Allow your first draft to be “bad” and just go with the flow. The most important thing is getting words on the page. 2. Being a full-time author is both about craft AND business. Indie or traditionally published, bringing a book into the world involves a lot of marketing and promotions. If you care at all about selling your books, understanding and evolving as a business person in tandem with the craft will help your career grow. 3. Not every reader is your reader. Some people are going to love your work, some will hate it. That’s OK. Find the people you are writing for and stop worrying about people you’re not. 4. Make peace with rejection. I say this as someone who was rejected by 111 agents just starting out and has faced countless other rejections throughout her career. Rejection is part of the process. If not agents, or editors, then readers who just don’t like your book. Grow from it and make peace with it. 5. You will always wish you were “better.” Your next book is your best book, because you’re continuing to learn and grow and improve as an author. Wishing you were better isn’t a sign of failure, it means you care and are still committed to honing your craft. If you want more publishing and writing tips, I have a free newsletter that I send out every month where I deep dive into an element of being an author. Check out the link in my bio to subscribe. Support your favorite indie authors, folks. Take risks on new books and new authors in your favorite genres! Self publishing costs a lot of money, so it’s always awesome when readers can support the writers doing it themselves! For reference, in 2022, I spent about $2100 on publishing Treason and Tea. I cut that cost a lot for Pirates, since I already had things like ISBNs, but that one still rang me $1400. Gilded abyss easily topped $2800 with editors and sensitivity readers. Don’t even get me started on The Day Death Stopped and that Witchy Hunt I hosted 😂😂 Have you self published? How much did it cost you? #writer #author #bookstagram #booktok #fyp #selfpublishing
