#Syntax and #semantics are both important but separate aspects of #communication . Nothing exemplifies this like a #sentence like "colourless green ideas sleep furiously" which is grammatically correct but lacks coherent #meaning (at least not without relying on some fairly niche word senses) The sentence was coined by Noam Chomsky but I didn't want to bog the video down addressing his connection to certain controversial figures who are currently in the news. #linguistics #language #grammar

Well that was damn satisfying! I love this soooooo much!! @nerdyaboutnature 🙌🙌🙌🙌 I Agree with a capitol A! Repost: See, language is a fluid, evolving way of communicating within a society that’s reflective of it’s values as they change over time, and English is rooted in some really old, archaic ways of thinking about the world around us, and this comes to light when we use these nouns. By standard definition, words like ‘Bear’, ‘Salmon’ or ‘Lichen’ are known as common nouns, just everyday things that we encounter with no special place or meaning. However, things like countries, cities, humans, companies, brands, and even ‘god’ are all known as proper nouns, which are supposed to be capitalized, to honour their hierarchy above the everyday common nouns. English, and the whole mentality one takes on in speaking, reading and thinking in it, is inherently anthropocentric, putting more value on these human things that it does things from the natural world. I would even argue that this subconscious exclusion of recognizing other forms of life as proper nouns has been one of many factors thats lead to our collective passivity when it comes to society or industry acting in myopic, destructive and unethical ways towards these various ‘nouns of nature’, and that’s exactly why I deliberately capitalize words like Redcedar, Hemlock, Moss, etc. Doing so consciously honours their existence, honours them as unique beings equivalent to humans. No, this isn’t proper english, but that’s exactly the point - I’m not writing a scientific dissertation here, this is social media! I’m trying to engage with you and think differently about the natural world we all share so that maybe as a society we can all evolve our relationship towards it and thus the way we value it, and language is one of the first steps in creating that change. Sure, it breaks the ‘rules of english’, but silly rules like that are meant to be broken, so lets play around with it and have some fun communicating with these words to express our values! #english #semantics #language #values #nature #philosophy #outdoors #wisdom #love
