Décrit pour la première fois par Edward Titchener en 1911, il désigne la perte temporaire du sens d’un mot après sa répétition rapide et continue. Ce n’est pas une anomalie du langage, mais une fatigue neuronale transitoire. Sur le plan neurocognitif, la répétition active de façon répétée les circuits du traitement sémantique situés dans le gyrus temporal supérieur, l’aire de Wernicke et l’aire de Broca. Cette suractivation entraîne une habituation neuronale : les neurones impliqués dans la reconnaissance du mot réduisent progressivement leur réponse. Le mot continue d’être perçu sur le plan phonétique, mais son association au sens s’interrompt brièvement. L’effet disparaît après quelques secondes ou minutes, dès que la stimulation cesse. The Semitic languages are a group of related languages spoken across North and East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and one of the major language groups that descended from the larger family of Afroasiatic languages. The Semitic language family consists of dozens of distinct languages and modern day dialects, but the major Semitic languages are Arabic, Amharic (spoken in Ethiopia), Tigrinya (spoken in Ethiopia and Eritrea), Hebrew, Tigre (spoken in Sudan), Aramaic (spoken in Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Iraq and Iran) and Maltese. Arabic is by far the most widely spoken of the Semitic languages, with around 300 million native speakers spread across the vast majority of North Africa and throughout the Arabian Peninsula. Although the variation in dialects (which include differences in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary) across the Arabic speaking world is considerable, all 30 varieties are still considered part of one language. Despite having many fewer speakers, Hebrew is probably the other most well-known Semitic language. It has around 5 million native speakers, with an additional 4 million second language speakers, and it’s one of the only languages spoken today to have been revived from a dead language. The term 'Assyrian' refers to the Aramaic script and may be reminiscent of the fact that it was during the period of Assyrian domination that Aramaic script and language received official status; Assyrians prefer not to use the term "Semitic" because it's based on religion and derives from the Greek form of Shem, a son of Noah in the Bible. Aramaic became a prestige language under the Neo-Assyrian Empire and was spoken in what is now Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Kuwait, and more.
