Language is not just about speaking — it is a structured system of sounds, meanings, and context. Linguistics helps us understand how language works at every level: from the smallest sound (phoneme) to the way people use language in society (discourse and pragmatics). For literature students, linguistics is extremely important because it helps us analyze texts more deeply. Concepts like syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse allow readers to understand how meaning is constructed in poetry, drama, fiction, and everyday communication. In this graphic, I have explained 10 important linguistic terms that every English literature student should know. These concepts are also very useful for exams like UGC NET English Literature, PhD entrance exams, and literature studies. Understanding linguistics not only improves language knowledge but also enhances the ability to interpret literary texts more critically. #Syntax and #semantics are both important but separate aspects of #communication . Nothing exemplifies this like a #sentence like "colourless green ideas sleep furiously" which is grammatically correct but lacks coherent #meaning (at least not without relying on some fairly niche word senses) The sentence was coined by Noam Chomsky but I didn't want to bog the video down addressing his connection to certain controversial figures who are currently in the news. #linguistics #language #grammar

الـسنتاكس (Syntax) هو اداة تحليلية بعلم اللغة (Linguistics) تساعدك تفكك ترتيب الكلمات بالعبارة او الجملة او النص، ومعرفة دور كل كلمة داخل الجملة، حتى يوصل المعنى المراد توصيله. ملاحظة: السنتاكس هو اداة تحليلية مو اداة تتعلم منها لغة! مثال: This tree is very tall الفاعل هنا هو الشجرة بس شوفوا نفس الجملة ونفس المعنى بس وسعنا الجملة والفاعل على شكل عبارة كاملة مو كلمة وحدة: (This tree Im seeing right now) is very tall. العبارة الي بين الاقواس هي الفاعل!! #بغداد #تعليم #الانكليزية

If you’re using unnecessarily complex words to try to sound smart… DON’T BOTHER. 🛑 We all know what it’s like when you’re speaking to someone and you feel you need a dictionary to look up every second word that comes out of their mouth. It’s not relatable and can be extremely off-putting. This is something I struggled with early in my legal career with all the unnecessary ‘legal jargon’. I really valued and respected those who could share with me in simple words. Daniel Oppenheimer, Professor of Cognitive Psychology at the University of California, found that people are considered as ‘smarter’ when their message is easier to understand. As he puts it: “People associate intelligence with clarity of expression.” The takeaway is that you don’t need to ‘try’ to sound smart, whether spoken or typed. Don’t alienate your audience. People appreciate and respect those who are approachable, warm and convey competence - and ‘competence’ in this context means speaking in a clear way, using words that your audience understands and not leaving them scratching their heads… Have you ever tried to sound smart by using unnecessarily large words? Or have you come across someone who likes to ‘flex’ their vocabulary muscles a little too frequently?👇 Share your thoughts! 📚 Reference: Oppenheimer, D. M. (2006). Consequences of erudite vernacular utilized irrespective of necessity: Problems with using long words needlessly. Applied Cognitive Psychology: The Official Journal of the Society for Applied Research in Memory and Cognition, 20(2), 139-156. #competence #interviewtips #managementtips #leadershiptips #charisma #presentation #presentationtips #communication #communicationtips #communicationskills #learnenglish #keepitsimple #englishlanguage #professionalcommunication
